I always wanted one and sometimes my mother would buy one. I would have loved the cover of this! I agree they could have been hoping for brand recognition, but even more than that they may have just been sowing seed to what grew in other fields. If they could have broken into another market besides just RPG books, I'm sure they would have continued to capitalize on it.RabidHobbithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12311851825409118094noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7487871339000666216.post-61517984943783188522020-09-29T03:48:46.367-04:002020-09-29T03:48:46.367-04:00I tend to agree. Such story books were a bit juvenile for the average (A)D&D player back then, I can't imagine any players would have picked up those books (except, by mistake, one issue :)).
Branding seems the logical explanation. Other crossover characters -- like Warduke -- had further appearances across various products, so I wondered if Kelek had also appeared elsewhere, perhaps in an obscure adventure somewhere.thekelvingreenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01928260185408072124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7487871339000666216.post-7727321831546202602020-09-26T13:34:41.465-04:002020-09-26T13:34:41.465-04:00Right you are! Presumably they eventually would have been had the toy line lasted longer.

And yes, I agree that the 1982-84 period is totally fascinating in a "what were they thinking? what were they trying to accomplish? what was the strategic end goal?" way. TSR was pretty much on top of the world during those years, but they made one bizarre move after another with the end result that by the end of 1984 they had managed to almost drive themselves out of business.Trenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01889179660165006042noreply@blogger.com
