Foster on the Nazgul...this is just another block of text lifted straight from OD&D.

I have to say, I only picked up a used copy (well, actually, two used copies) of Holmes this last year, and I read the whole thing cover-to-cover (though I didn't blog about it). This is the one edition of D&D I've never played (excluding the latest), and I admit that reading your cover-by-cover analysis is piquing my interest once again. I really think a campaign died strictly to the Holmes rules would make for an interesting (and waaay-off-the-beaten-track type) game.
: )JBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08532311924539491087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7487871339000666216.post-20066520421901918902010-07-22T01:20:07.592-04:002010-07-22T01:20:07.592-04:00Shriekers first appeared in The Strategic Review #...Shriekers first appeared in The Strategic Review #3.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7487871339000666216.post-32481741831229084622010-07-22T01:04:07.775-04:002010-07-22T01:04:07.775-04:00Skeletons are a 1/2-hit die in Holmes, just as the...Skeletons are a 1/2-hit die in Holmes, just as they are in OD&D. It's a feature that dropped out of the game after that point, as neither AD&D nor Moldvay follow this.James Maliszewskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00341941102398271464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7487871339000666216.post-2484185416782447812010-07-22T01:01:53.479-04:002010-07-22T01:01:53.479-04:00I can't find my copy of Holmes right now (whic...I can't find my copy of Holmes right now (which is a scary prospect), but weren't skeletons 1/2-hit die in it? They're 1 full hit die in the Monster Manual, and I recall us being confused by the difference during a game.Anthonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01254215329246851683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7487871339000666216.post-70897688878331923942010-07-22T00:42:50.219-04:002010-07-22T00:42:50.219-04:00A couple quibbles: 1) the Tolkien references in th...A couple quibbles: 1) the Tolkien references in the spectre and wight descriptions come from OD&D vol. II (they were edited out at the same time as hobbits became halflings and ents became treants); 2) the AD&D MM was released a couple months AFTER the Holmes set, and IIRC all of the monsters from it that appear in Holmes (including giant rats, spiders, and centipedes) were actually added in the Holmes "2nd edition" (1978) and don't appear in the earliest printings.Trenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01889179660165006042noreply@blogger.com
