They're all good in my opinion, but I'd especially recommend the first three -- Young Flandry, Captain Flandry, and Sir Dominic Flandry -- as must-reads.James Maliszewskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00341941102398271464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7487871339000666216.post-15767431556161375822011-12-05T11:35:46.956-05:002011-12-05T11:35:46.956-05:00I've enjoyed Anderson's stories, but, for ...I've enjoyed Anderson's stories, but, for some reason, never read any Flandry tales. It's a desire to wall off change and preserve things as they are, which certainly describes Anderson's Terran Empire.James Maliszewskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00341941102398271464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7487871339000666216.post-72107376859167699292011-12-05T07:19:16.753-05:002011-12-05T07:19:16.753-05:00Actually it was the 1929' crime novel Red Harv...Actually it was the 1929' crime novel Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett that inspired Yojimbo.

True, but my point was only that "Tiger by the Tail" couldn't have been inspired by Yojimbo any more than by James Bond, since both works post-date this short story.James Maliszewskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00341941102398271464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7487871339000666216.post-35032841468108199162011-12-05T06:45:50.261-05:002011-12-05T06:45:50.261-05:00What have the Space-Romans ever done for us?What have the Space-Romans ever done for us?anarchisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05546197561922726279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7487871339000666216.post-53319687774771131672011-12-05T05:06:18.849-05:002011-12-05T05:06:18.849-05:00"But there is also the time when the civiliza..."But there is also the time when the civilization is old, when it wants nothing but to be left in peace"

I don't think that's exactly right. Non-universalist civilisations like ancient Egypt and China may fundamentally wish to be 'left in peace', but universalist empires often have great difficulty in moving to a status-quo paradigm. An empire may be both decadent and still have pretensions to universal rule; whether Roman, Arab, Turk, or the modern US and (in its way) the EU.Simonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01173759805310975320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7487871339000666216.post-80961108625926201002011-12-05T03:44:54.951-05:002011-12-05T03:44:54.951-05:00Actually it was the 1929' crime novel Red Har...Actually it was the 1929' crime novel Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett that inspired Yojimbo.crowkinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03066821931343968827noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7487871339000666216.post-80985091743187200832011-12-05T00:35:32.292-05:002011-12-05T00:35:32.292-05:00Thank you.
