A Vote of Confidence

A combination of scheduling conflicts has conspired to put my Dwimmermount on hiatus for the last two weekends and will do so again this coming one. I'm not happy about that, since I think regular, continuous play is an important part of old school gaming, but family obligations always take priority over fun (sometimes all too literally) and so I must wait yet another week before resuming play where we left off last time.

I mention this both because several people have emailed me to learn when I'd post next about my campaign -- there's a minority of people for whom "actual play" reports are of great interest -- and because I was chatting with one of my players last night and he expressed disappointment that we wouldn't be playing again this weekend. I take great pleasure in hearing this, since this particular player was the one I most worried might not be enjoying himself. As it turns out, he is and he even went so far as to say he "missed" Dwimmermount.

Just what every referee wants to hear.

  1. Its always great to get positive feedback from players. Especially so when you think the player isn't enjoying himself.

I agree that regular, continuous play is really important, and when it can't happen its frustrating. Real life has a way of interfering with our fantasy lives as we get older... damn you real life.

  2. I'm in the minority James...I for one love reading actual play reports. (That's probably why I try and post mine w/ some small amount of regularity.)

I live with my players (wife and children) so you can imagine the odd interplay there. ;-) But, to be truthful, it's a little easier to schedule. As they grow I'm sure that will drastically change. "sigh"

  3. I have a blog (only available in Hungarian) for reviews of the games we play. I run two campaigns at the moment, one with colleuges every two weeks and one with old friends once a month. Either me or one of the players - that's the better - sum up the happenings of the sessions and the others can comment them. It's a good way keep them in touch with the game and they also like to re-read how much fun they had!

  4. Let me add my voice as one who is patiently (yet eagerly) awaiting the next installment of Dwimmermount. I'm sorry to hear that we've still got some waiting ahead, but encouraged to know that the campaign is developing traction.

  5. I too enjoy reading about your actual play sessions. For me, I can't help but feel like I will capture some type of "old school" essence that I will be able to impart on my own games. I am gm'ing a 3.5 campaign at the moment with 5 players.

  6. Count me in the minority. I'd love to play an old-school dungeon crawl, but it's not something that's likely to happen any time soon, and so I like to read about yours.

Also, it's really good to see your many theories and thoughts about gaming put into practice; it's all very good to expound on this and that, but it's another to test it in an actual game, and I admire your efforts to do that.

  7. During most of my adult gaming life, I have been lucky to get one together every month. We'd make it a 6-8 hour session though, so we made up for a lot.

With my three hour weeknight games these days, it seems like we have barely begun before it is time to shut it down. I kind of like it though, those super long games took a lot out of a younger me. Espeically with all the drinkin'.

  8. Same here... I play regularly, every six weeks with at least one player. Sometimes for two days straight, sometimes one day, and another player wants to DM and showcase their adventure... but they haven't got much tiem these days and I am a better at managing it, I guess... heh-heh... Wish I can do it once a week for an evening...

  10. I like the updates. I am not able to play anymore (work and family obligations) but reading what happened in other campaigns takes me back to when I did have the time.

Thanks for the site. There is stuff on here I have not thought about since college!
