Today is the feast of the Epiphany, marking the end of the Christmas season. I'm still busy and distracted by activities relating to Christmas, as you no doubt have noticed, so I'm going to make this week's Open Friday question a quick and somewhat vapid one: what gaming gifts did you receive for Christmas this year? For myself, I received only boardgames, as I've already discussed, the rest of my gifts having nothing to do with the hobby -- and that's fine by me. I already have way more games than I know what to do with.
I got an Airfix Modern RAF set which I'll be using for Cold War wargaming. The first time my wife has ever gotten me toy soldiers for Christmas!
ReplyDeleteAlso, a CD of Napoleonic marching music to play in the wargames room. A Trail of Cthulhu supplement written by a friend of mine and a some 20mm Sikhs for my 1840s India forces.
An embarrassment of riches.
A set of Ratnik Bruegelburg miniatures (great for WFRP-type fantasy).
ReplyDeleteDwarf Kings Hold from Mantic.
A batch of Dragon Warriors books from the OOP Mongoose printings.
A Warhammer 40K Steel Legion Squad.
Oh, and, the one gift to consume them all (at least for a while), Skyrim.
I got the Dragon Age set 2 box.
ReplyDeleteI spent part of an Amazon gift card for a copy of Verbosh and the D&D cartoon DVDs.
I spent a Visa gift card on PDFs of Bunnies & Burrows, 2300AD, and a couple of 2300AD adventures.
Got a Kindle Fire which has been a JOY to not only load up with a dton of gaming PDFs (digest sized books are GREAT on it), but also to use as my primary blog reader. Also equipped it with a number of eBooks like those you covered for Pulp SF month (Chandler, Tubb and the last of the Flandry releases). Last, I used a gift card to *finally* finish my FGU Space Opera collection. Good times.
ReplyDeleteI got nothing game-related, but I had just bought myself LotFP's Carcosa and isle of the unknown, so no complaints.
ReplyDeleteMy one big present was this:
ReplyDeletehttp://gridlore.dreamwidth.org/1764444.html
My mother in law gave us memberships in the Grateful Dead MMO (http://gratefuldeadgame.com/)
I got BRP Merrie England and a new set of dice that match a loner I have that I mentioned over a year ago I wished I could find a set.
ReplyDeleteNone for me, but I got my kids Pandemic and the Angry Birds tabletop game.
ReplyDelete*The Game of Thrones* board game from Fantasy Flight Games.
ReplyDeleteSome old school modules: *The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh,* *White Plume Mountain.*
It was great.
Print copy of Barbarians of Lemuria.
ReplyDeleteGaming related, were the new Conan movie and the Del Rey edition of The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane.
I got the Demon Idol from Otherworld miniatures! Woo hoo - its the one from the 1st Ed PH cover. I can't wait to paint it and have my players battle their way through some lizard men!
ReplyDeletehttp://otherworldminiatures.co.uk/shop/demons-devils/dd1-the-demon-idol/
i got the old fr 1st edition expansion books i didnt have, magister and waterdeep and the north
ReplyDeleteI got a copy of Forbidden Island, and have played it a few times. If you like Pandemic, you will like this. Created by the same designer and similar mechanics, but plays faster than Pandemic.
ReplyDeleteI also got a copy of Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks. Looking forward to reading that in the near future.
The One Ring RPG (2 copies)
ReplyDeleteThe Magic Book for BRP
The Pathfinder Beginner Box
Last Night on Earth boardgame
Star Trek Expeditions boardgame
Cthulhu Gloom card game
Pandemic boardgame...
All in all, a good Christmas haul! ;)
Nothing as such for myself, but I bought my wife the A Touch of Evil boardgame by Flying Frog, to lure her out of Skyrim, at least temporarily ;-).
ReplyDeleteThe only gaming item I got this year was a copy of Chaosuim's Beyond the Mountains of Madness, and it was all good.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I fist saw this at the gaming store and thought I'll pick that up payday. Well payday came and someone else had bought it before me and copies were no longer available, and used copies quickly started spiraling upwards in price.
Well, I bought myself the PDF and hardcover edition of the Thousand Suns Rulebook...
ReplyDeleteUs adults didn't get much, which was a good thing as I couldn't decide on what I wanted (to buy or not to buy Laurel and Hardy: The Essential Collection?). But thanks to my Mom's Christmas money (and a 20% off sale after the day at Half-Price Books) I have a complete set of the 2E Encyclopedia Magica with enough left over to snag a copy of GAZ1 The Grand Duchy of Karamekios at auction on eBay.
ReplyDelete-DM Glen
WEG's Price of Freedom boxed set.
ReplyDeleteI got no games, but my 13-year-old son got 2 big Pathfinder books.
ReplyDeleteI fell in love with Microlite74, does that count?
ReplyDeleteSwords & Wizardry Complete.
ReplyDeleteVornheim.
Cities of the Young Kingdoms: The South (for MRQII Elric).
Two-Fisted Tales (a damn fine pulp RPG. Maybe it's not strictly speaking "old school" but I'd love to see you, James, as a lover of pulp fiction, review it some day).
I got the Pathfinder Beginner Box and Skyrim.
ReplyDeleteArkham Horror was the closest game to the fantasy realm. Other games, for the kids and the family in general.
ReplyDeleteMy wife surprised me with a Pathfinder Beginner Box; and I bought myself Carcosa and Isle of the Unknown.
ReplyDeleteGood year this year, I must've been a good boy:
ReplyDelete- Pendragon 4th edition, near mint
- DMG and MM for D&D 3.0 (complete my set of 3 core books for collecting purposes)
- Carcosa
- The One Ring RPG
I got the Dresden Files this year from my boys!
ReplyDeleteI haven't actually received it yet, but I'm expected a belated xmas gift of over 100 old-fashioned lead miniatures. I gave away all of my gaming gear years ago and after returning to the game have restored everything but my miniatures collection. This set should provide an excellent start!
ReplyDeleteNo one buys poor S'mon gaming stuff, *sigh* - had to make do with a bottle of Balvenie from the wife. :)
ReplyDeleteI cheated by buying my son the WoTC 'Dragon Collectors' Set', which I wanted, but couldn't justify spending the £38 on myself for 5 nice but not very big dragon minis. We've played with them a lot.
I recieved a Bag of Holding from Think Geek. Very cool and their not kidding when they say it's roomy.
ReplyDeleteI got ACTA:Star Fleet and the new Legend book from MGP. Now all i have to do is find people who want to play with me
ReplyDeleteI got a hardback of Labyrinth Lord, and used some Christmas gift money to pick up a TSR Silver Anniversary Boxed Set at a FLGS. I mean, I play GURPS, but I have everything so buying me GURPS is like buying water for a fish. ;)
ReplyDeleteI gave two gaming books, Dragons at Dawn (with Twilight) and The Dungeon Alphabet, to the same person who gave me LL. :)
"Designers & Dragons" by Shannon Appelcline, the book that details the history of the RPG industry. A great read, halfway through by now!
ReplyDeleteI'm stunned to find myself recommending a lite dungeon-crawl 'flicking game,' Catacombs, which my brother-in-law gave me. It's a cross between D&D and Crossbows and Catapults (remember that AWESOMENESS?), wherein you flick wooden discs instead of rolling dice, substituting marble-shooter dexterity for chance. The oracular power of the middle fingernail, and all that. Flick your PC for melee attacks, flick a projectile for ranged and spells.
ReplyDeleteJust enough dungeon theme to satisfy nerds, a little team play, a little planning, well-balanced growing threat from the GM (yeah a GM runs the monsters)...just a neat little game for anyone who doesn't take such things too seriously. Perfect for kids! Warning: preparing the discs the first time you open the box will take at least 30 minutes, as stickers must be carefully applied. Mild pain in the butt.
Still, along the lines of the Lego dungeon game, it's a swell gift.
The in-law's GF gave me one of those portable Nintendo things, though. In all such conflicts, Mario wins.
I got Agricola, a resource-management boardgame a la Settlers or Puerto Rico. This one's already getting a lot of play in my family.
ReplyDeleteDidn't get Presents this year. Creating Guide to Dangerous Fungi as my Prez to everyone else.
ReplyDeleteSO James...Apparently Canada is ditching the Beaver for the Polar Bear in how it deals with its southern neighbor.
I suppose receiving my contributors' copy of Signal 13's just released Other Worlds counts (and made me very happy).
ReplyDeleteLego Heroica
ReplyDeleteI took advantage of the Xmas sales (Lulu, etc.) to load up the Kindle Fire on PDfs.
All I got was a rock...
ReplyDeleteNo, wait! That was Halloween, wasn't it??
From the greatest girlfriend in the world I received a boxed set of 4th print 1975 OD&D LBB's complete with supplements 1-4 in almost perfect condition. The box was a little rough, but the books are outstanding!
ReplyDeleteBest Christmas ever!!
Once upon a time, Epiphany got it's own Octave, like Nativity, in the West.
ReplyDeleteAnd on the Sanctoral Cycle, Christmastide continues until Candlemas/Purification of the BVM.
So continue to celebrate, James. We are! :D
In other news, my set of DungeonDice arrived and turned up under the tree, as did C&C: Ancients The Spartan Army expansion kit.
ReplyDeleteLots of books and food and clothes for everyone.
Big non-gaming gift was a cordless reciprocating saw from my in laws. Yay! Now I can trim back some of the unruly trees in my yard without paying an arm and a leg! :D
Oh, and I also finally got the Role-Aids Fantasy Treasures II. I’ve had the first volume for years, but none of the M–Z treasures.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteZombie Fluxx (card game), a Munchkin expansion pack, and a 30-sided die! Of course, I also got a bunch of non-game items...
ReplyDeleteThe die came yesterday morning; but we celebrate Theophany rather than Epiphany.
Got this on Epiphany day so I suppose it might count.
ReplyDeleteNear mint copies of the Star Wars RPG (WEG 2nd edition) and most importantly, of the Hollow World boxed set (for D&D BECMI/RC). A bit 90s-ish in presentation, but very pulpy and gonzo in feel, like most of the haphazardly put-together Mystara setting, actually.
James, if you're reading this, I'd also love to see you tackle Mystara one day. It's a setting with an interesting history, and IMHO with strong pulp fantasy sensibilities (unusual for 1990s TSR).
Hollow world.... Hmmmmm. Good stuff right there!
ReplyDeleteI got a Palladium grab bag and an OD&D OCE White Box. :)
ReplyDeleteSanta brought me Invasion From Outer Space and I picked up the Cities and Knights expansion for Catan during Black Friday at my FLGS.
ReplyDeleteThere has only been one year that I didn't get some kind of gaming gift which left me with the feeling that Santa forgot to stop at my house. But not this year!
ReplyDelete* 1 pound of dice in a Xmas stocking
* Reaper Miniatures Mouseling Adventurers
* Talisman boardgame
* Bag of Holding laptop bag
* AD&D PHB (6 in my collection now)
Awful Green Things From Outer Space (Steve Jackson Games) and a used copy of Wizard's Quest (1979 by Avalon Hill).
ReplyDeleteNothing gaming-related; I bought myself a vintage Macintosh SE/30 (20Mb ram, 250Mb HD, 2x external CD-ROM). I had always wanted one, but back in the day it cost way too much.
ReplyDeleteFor the first time in about 5 years, I didn't get a game related gift. I have so many games now, some of which haven't been on the table yet, that it doesn't really matter, though.
ReplyDeleteThe kids, however, got some of the Lego boardgames and the oldest boy got some M:tG cards, so I've been gaming with Christmas gifts anyway.
I'm not sure I got anything gaming related for Christmas, unless you count the storage box for some of my dice, and they intended that to hold something else entirely.
