Backer Rewards for the Dwimmermount Kickstarter

As some of you are likely aware, today is the day when the Dwimmermount Kickstarter launches. The official start isn't until later this afternoon (I'll make an announcement here when it goes live), but I wanted to draw people's attention to this post over at the Autarch blog, in which Tavis Allison -- who's been a hero in pulling this whole thing together -- reveals the backer rewards for the Kickstarter, some of which I'm very excited about and I hope others will be too.

If you're at all interested in this, go on over to the Autarch blog and take a look. Feel free to comment here or there, if you have any questions or thoughts about the rewards. Tavis or I will do our best to answer them.

Thanks!

  1. Okay, those are all quite awesome rewards, though sadly I'm going to have to stick to the lower end of the scale. I'm just curious as to what differences there will be between the ACKS & LL versions of Dwimmermount. Not that it really makes any difference to me, since in any event, I'd be converting it over to the mutant version of B/X I'm working on.

    1. One of the things we'll use the Kickstarter process to decide is what ACKS fans would want to see from that version, beyond the minor conveniences of AC system conversion and the like. One place I think Autarch could add something of real worth would be providing support for mercantile and domain play with the Fortress of Muntberg. Not that I am encouraging anyone to overthrow it and set themselves up as its rulers or anything, but you know how players are.

  2. Cool. One question, though...LL is my preferred system but will I still get pdfs of both LL and ACKS versions? I like ACKS, too, you see...

  3. The other differences between the two versions are the game statistics and, since ACKS derives from LL, even those differences will be minimal.

Yes, you'll get PDFs of both versions, though you will have to choose one version or the other for the hardcover, printed book.

    1. We should put in a parenthetical add-on that you could add $30 to get both versions in hardcover, because people who want both should be celebrated!

The book is the only place where the stats matter, all the other stuff is version-neutral and the hardback is the only place where it costs us anything not to give you both versions.

  5. Your series of Dwimmermount-tagged posts (following the "Dragonlance Ruined Everything" article) was my introduction to the OSR, so this release occupies a special place for me. I'm greatly looking forward to it.

    1. Me too - without Grognardia I would still see the White Box I inherited from my ex-in-laws as a curio instead of the Book of Gold. Playing James' PbP game was like being invited onstage to jam with my guitar heroes; helping publish Dwimmermount is like playing in a cover band and then getting asked to go on tour with the originals.

  6. Great. Really looking forward to this.

One more question...does the map booklet contain only maps that already exist in the book? Or does it contain extras that aren't in the book?

    1. The map book contains only the maps already in the book. It's more for convenience than for added material.

    2. I think this kind of mode is KEY for kickstarter RPG projects -- make the value add something /other/ than just pure content. I, personally, don't have much interest in projects where the "entry" level support gets me only some of the content. I /like/ projects where I can choose to entry level for PDF copies, medium level of some sort to get printed copy plus chotchkies, and so on.

    3. Agreed. It is awesome to use other experiences and participation to help fund making the complete content available to everyone. We made the rookie mistake of offering the Domains at War content as a bonus reward for ACKS when it should have been both part of the core book (in miniature) and a Kickstarter of its own (fully kitted out and expanded). Look for that to be remedied soon!

    4. So Domains will be available or a separate kickstarter at some time, i had thought i had just missed it when i missed the first book. thats great news

    1. Adventuring Parties reflects my commitment to the idea that gaming professionals' skills are valuable whether we're writing or GMing, so I thought about making that a backer reward. And since James' time and seats at the B-Strat's Sultan are fundamentally limited, Kickstarter could be a good way to handle scheduling and scarcity. Ultimately I decided it is better for the project to mix this in to the Adept reward and the artist-in-residence program. It is awesome to play with James and I hope everyone will have the chance to do so sometimes in their lives. And I am psyched that he is making some time every week to play on G+. But everyone benefits if there is an intermixing culture of play between the creator and the backers choosing illustrations and the artists doing them. And the goal is not just to provide cool things for those who can pay for them, but also to make the end result the best it can be for everyone who will receive it in any form.

  9. Nice to see shipping to Canada worked in :)

    1. Yeah, although we have the US's weird exclusionary banking policy to thank for setting up the partnership between Autarch and Grognardia Games, it just felt wrong to charge more for sending books to James' hometown.

    2. I also appreciate the free North American shipping, being in Toronto as well.

  10. Can you talk a little more about the Megadungeon Tracker? It sounds cool, but I'm not sure I understand exactly what it is (and it's quite a jump to have it included)...

    1. yeah, i'm not sure exactly what this would be, maybe a moc up or a photo of what this is could be included on the kickstarter page. Super excited about this, ACKS is my new go to OSR game and i've been waiting for Dwimmermount forever. to get them both together like this is really exciting

    2. There is a description of the Tracker up in te comments over on the kickstarter site now. Sounds interesting and innovative, so I decided to drop the extra cash to get it.

    3. I added more information to the bottom of the main page. Unfortunately it is too innovative to have a mockup but we think that the community's playtesting and collective expertise will work out the best solution to the design specs for this one.
