My son and I played a game of The Awful Green Things from Outer Space and had a lot of fun, though my son's primary concern was keeping the crew's mascot alive.
AGT is one of my favorite boardgames; I played it with my boys, too, when they were still young enough to think dad's hobbies were cool. Happily, they've now comlpleted the "nothing associated with dad is even remotely cool" phase, and I might be able to get them to play this again. Thanks for the reminder!
If ever there were a Steve Jackson game that deserved the deluxe treatment, this would be it for me. I'd love to get a little plastic Mascot to put on my desk.
We've been using Awful Green Things to play out what happens if the White Sandbox players roll a wandering monster encounter check while rocketing the Ghost Tower of Inverness through the slimeosphere. Converting the AGT's strength to hit dice makes it a fun challenge for a party of about six 3rd-7th level PCs, and the random weapon effect chits are as fun in OD&D/ACKS as in the boardgame.
Now that's a blast from the past! Spent may a night drinking Zugwortz and playing this game in college. Looks like you got one of the new reprints. I still have the old original version along with the add on material that appeared in Dragon Magazine. Definitely my favorite Steve Jackson game.
Looks like that's the 8th (and current) edition. That hard back and thick counter construction looks a lot easier to handle than my flimsy paper and thin counter version.
By the way, some magnificent bastards built the Znutar and ran this as a full blown miniatures game: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll112/joedever/Salute%25202009%2520-%2520Part%2520Three/Salute_2009355.jpg&imgrefurl=http://ilovewargameing.21.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t%3D2221/&h=697&w=1024&sz=128&tbnid=-PLbO6TO7N1q2M:&tbnh=90&tbnw=132&zoom=1&docid=GVgvWS8TdyFvMM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=t2unT8zFComwiQLe0KiYAg&ved=0CHkQ9QEwBQ&dur=453

ReplyDeleteGiven the source material, and given the nature of the not-Ripley survivor of the _Nostromo_ incident, I would say your son's instincts were correct.
ReplyDeleteYour son isn't alone. Something about Ook makes him the first target for every Awful Green thing player.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I love that game. As a matter of fact, I'm going to be running it at Dexcon this July.
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!

ReplyDeleteI have played so much of this game it's ludicrous. And I love the new board. And Ook the Mascot... DELICIOUS.
ReplyDeleteMy laptops have always been named Znutar. I'm typing this from Znutar IV.
ReplyDeleteIs that the most current version? My boxed version doesn't look anything like that?

ReplyDeleteClassic! Now where's that copy of Cosmic Encounter?
ReplyDeleteIt's a great game that models old time monster-movies excellently.
ReplyDeleteHi James. Sorry to hijack your comments, but could you check for mails from me please? Haven't been able to get a response for a while.

ReplyDeleteI haven't pulled either Snits Revenge or AGTFOS out to teach the family---perhaps next weekend. Thanks for the inspiration, James.
ReplyDeleteAllan.
Wow! I haven't played that game in ages.

How cool is that?
Great game, used to play it a lot with my dad, so I guess it's a good idea to play it with your son :).
