It is a crime against God and man that Kirby didn't do a comic book adaptation of the entire Bible, ending with the pure psychedelica of the Apocalypse.
Kirby was Jewish, yes, but his work in comics, especially his later work, drew on the entirety of what we call the Bible (and the literature of other faiths as well) for inspiration. I don't think he would necessarily have shied away from a project like the one Geoffrey is imagining.
True. Jack Kirby's faith didn't stop him from co-creating Thor or creating the Eternals (who were inspired by Greek mythology).
And in many of these, including the image of the angel above, Kirby renders his gods as technological beings, perhaps owing to a popular sentiment of the times from 'Chariots of the Gods,' that the gods of ancient cultures were alien visitors.
Yeah, Kirby's Chariots of the Gods look for that angel is beyond awesome. Imagine what Kirby could have done with a technological look for the vision in the 1st chapter of Ezekiel. Imagine Kirby's drawings of Christ casting out demons: an angry, muscular Jesus shooting Kirby Krackle out of His hands to shatter the evil, technological spirits into little bits of transistors and such. My God, it would have been the single coolest Bible adaptation of all time.
Because one religious comic wasn't enough this week? :D
ReplyDeleteJust kidding. That image is amazing. Good ol' Kirby!
Ha! If this post elicits the slightest negative reaction from anyone for whatever reason, I may have to call it quits.
DeleteWow. It's as if...what would it be like if religion were cool?

ReplyDeleteOh, wow. The thought of that ...

Not exactly an orthodox idea.
