School Rule

From issue #48 of Dragon (April 1981):

  1. I don't know. I was able to talk my way out of some serious jams in high school, from the librarian to the assistant principal, to sundry teachers in between, usually with a dose of humor. I'd like to think that somewhere in there I made some sort of Charisma/Bardic Saving throw.

  2. This just depresses me when I consider the modern day. Save to avoid merciless bullying from your age group peers. Save to avoid getting shot or stabbed as a bystander in a fight. Save to avoid sexual assault by fellow student or adult authority figure. Save to actually learn anything when extremists on both ends of the political spectrum have turned education into a ideological warzone. Save to conform well enough to avoid penalties to tomorrow's saves.

Getting sent to the principal's office feels quaint and innocent and horribly outdated in 2022, but telling kids they're on their own is way to spot on.

    1. I once read about a poll among high school teachers from the 50s. What did the teachers think the biggest problem in school was?

Chewing gum in class! That must have been the first level of the dungeon...
