Strangely enough, Tolkien's illustration reminds me of certain paintings by two other artists, both his contemporaries: Nicholas Roerich (mystical philosopher) and Rockwell Kent (painter, illustrator, printmaker, best known nowadays for his illustrations for Moby Dick). Kent lived for a time in Greenland, and some of his works have the same combination of snow and vibrant color we see in the Tolkien.
Merry Christmas to all of you! You’re all an interesting and fun group of people to interact with, for sure! And thanks James, for all the work you put in on this blog throughout the year. I hope you know just how appreciated you are.

ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to you and all your family, James.

Merry Christmas! Is that a Tolkien?
ReplyDeleteYes, it is.
DeleteYes, it's the illustration from Tolkien's 1926 Father Christmas letter to his children.
