The Fandom Association of Central Texas has established the Aaron Allston Donation Fund to help defer the costs of Mr Allston's recent bypass surgery. Although most well-known as a novelist, Aaron Allston began his writing career in the RPG business in the mid-80s, his most noteworthy product being the Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia about which I wrote recently.
Information on how to make a donation to the fund can be found via the link above.
I'll check it out. I have to admit I'm a bit surprised that he would need help defraying the cost of the surgery considering that there is a a new Star Wars novel with his byline on the bookstore shelves. Someone needs to start a health plan group for freelance authors, I guess.
ReplyDeleteWriters don't make much - successful usually means you can pay your bills without a day job or an understanding spouse. And a medical crisis can bankrupt people with insurance, never mind those paying the full cost. Damned shame - in addition to the Cyclopedia, he did the Grand Duchy of Karameikos and Dawn of the Emperors, both classics as well as the Mythic Greece supplement. He really deserves better.

Don't forget that Allston was a major contributor to HERO Games and Champions. His sourcebook "Strike Force" remains one of my all-time favorite sourcebooks/campaign journals. Thanks for promoting this, James.
