Free RPG Day Haul

I never had much use for Free RPG Day in the past. I didn't have anything against it, but the start of the promotion coincided almost exactly with the beginning of my disinterest in what "mainstream" publishers were producing, so I never had any reason to give it any heed. This year was different, though, because I knew Goodman Games was producing a 16-page booklet containing two adventures for Dungeon Crawl Classic Roleplaying Game and I wanted to snag it.

So, I set off to a couple of local game stores and succeeded in my quest. I also grabbed a copy of Columbia Games's map of Hârn (which, to be fair, I already owned, but I can never get enough maps), as well as some funky dice from Q-Workshop. I didn't find  anything else that was of interest to me, but I'm very happy to have gotten the map and the DCC RPG module.

  2. I have to admit, it was the DCC module that got me out the door (that and Gamma Ray Games is practically next door to me). What a haul! I also got a free Pathfinder mini and the Harn map.

I grabbed everything I could because I figure if I can't/won't use them, I can also strip them of maps, NPCs, plot ideas or give them to friends.

  3. Ha, awesome, those are the same two things I picked up! Harn has always fascinated me but I've never played it, and like you I also love maps. As for DCC, I have to admit that my opinion of the game has changed greatly since last year. I'm looking forward to running it!

  6. You've been missing out. Last couple years there's been quickstarts for Tunnels & Trolls, Castles & Crusades and Paranoia. Plus adventures for DCC, and Call of Cthulhu. I think there was supposed to be something for the new Metamorphosis Alpha this year that got cancled.

The Paranoia quickstart is especially interesting. So much more concise than the main manual must be. Some of these are decent little, and largely overlooked, RPGs in their own right.

  7. Hah! My FLGS was cleaned out before I got there except for copies of the DCC booklet and the Harn map. Fortunately, those were the two things I wanted the most! Now if they just didn't sell out of DCC itself....

  8. I like what Columbia Games did with the map on the back. I was lucky enough to get the DCC module as well as the Pathfinder, 4E and Shadowrun modules. I had helped kickstart the Gaming Paper module. Did anyone see that at their FLGS?

  9. I got all of the stuff, but only liked the Harn map, the DCC module and the Cosmic Patrol quickstart. I was curious about Mechwarrior, but sadly from the rules it looks like a train wreck of useless complexity; oh well, I will keep to my Mechwarrior 2nd edition which is faster, easier and most importantly, is perfectly integrated with the Battletech mechanics.

  10. ... Field of Daisy's is a HarnMaster module that was released for Free RPG Day. It was quite well received. Now to my question ... is that DCC module set on the Misty Isle? o_0

  11. I grabbed much of the swag, but those were the two prime pieces for me (plus the Conspiracy X QS, but since i was GMing, that was in the bag).

I loves me the Harn maps. I'd been seeing the ads since my earliest days of Dragon (#60), and a bunch of years ago, I finally sprang for one of the Harn map / index packages they offered for the cost of shipping.

The maps tend to be excellent - cities, towns, villages. Generally speaking, it's a pretty low magic, low technology world. I find it feels more Dark Age / Early Medieval.

While it's a serious toned game, and not "weird" at all, the similarities in the common man, that map - and various Harn stuff - would make a fine start for a DCC, 0E, LL sandbox. I thought the setting snippets on the back of the map (finally, they use the back of the map) were pretty comparable to, say, the first Greyhawk gazetteer descriptions.

  14. You all are lucky. I saw some of the things tht where being given away this year and checked all 3 of my local game shops here in Kansas City.. Not one of them was participating in free rpg day. A to why, I havent a clue. My understanding is that it doesnt cost the shop anything.
