I have quite a few things to share over the next few days, but, in the meantime, enjoy these photos of a surprise gift I received when I swapped some RPG books with someone.
I remember when these miniature reprints were released back in 1999, but I never acquired any at the time. I wasn't really playing D&D anyway, let alone first edition AD&D, so I didn't see any point in purchasing these things. Now that I own a couple, I regret my shortsightedness, especially since, as I recall, there were also miniature reproductions of the Moldvay/Cook boxed sets. Those would be awesome to own, don't you think?
That is pretty cool. Never knew they released mini versions.
ReplyDeleteI seem to remember they also did a miniature version of the Word of Greyhawk boxed set, complete with the map...Secretly lusting after that? You betcha!
ReplyDeleteThat page you have displayed reminds me that I was so bummed that WotC never produced any pre-painted plastic minis to represent Modrons. Oh, how I wanted to stage the Great Modron March.
ReplyDeleteIn before, "You know, you could just use dice."
I have three. Versions of the dungeoneers, wilderness and the greyhawk adventures hard cover books. I wish I'd bought more, but there weren't any others there - not surprising discounted at practically nothing.
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing these at the time, but I was also in the "not playing D&D" at the time mentality and passed on them. I do regret that if only because they would have been a nifty little collection to have.
ReplyDeleteI always lusted after those little books, but they never made it as far as New Zealand — or at least, not to anywhere I was. I've always had a predilection towards miniaturized versions of things, for some reason :)
ReplyDeleteHaving followed your illustrious blog for more than a couple years now, I'm happy to note some similarities. In this case, I love the little booklette style. Now, I just need to have Tim Shorts explain how to make 'em and I'm all good.
ReplyDeleteWell, at least some of them could be represented with dice XD
ReplyDeleteCool and handy! I wonder why there aren't more of these for other systems as well?
ReplyDeleteWhen WotC reprinted the AD&D books for the latest collectors edition, they described this huge pain staking process of scanning and retyping and reformatting each book. I wonder if Twenty First Century Games had to go through the same ordeal in 1999 or were they able to accomplish their reprints through a simpler and cheaper process.
ReplyDeleteI gave the small Moldvey/Cook box sets to may brother, I should ask if he still has them.
ReplyDeleteI have all of them and they are really awesome.
ReplyDeleteIs there an ISBN Number? Is it different from the one for the "large" version?
ReplyDeleteWow! Thanks for passing that on. I never knew they existed. eBay here I come!
ReplyDeleteMini-modrons!
ReplyDeleteWell, shortsightedness is better than longsightedness in this case.
