Rob Kuntz News

Yesterday, I received the following announcement:

The announcement contains links to two of the parties involved: TLB Games and Legends of Roleplaying, whose sites provide additional information about their products and plans for the future. Of particular interest to me are the references to Kuntz's Kalibruhn setting and his megadungeon, Castle El Raja Key, both of which are among the earliest examples of their kind in the history of the hobby. I believe it to be a tragedy that neither the Castle Blackmoor nor the Castle Greyhawk dungeons have ever been made available in a published form (the same goes for M.A.R. Barker's Jakállan underworld, though that, at least, in still a possibility in the future), so the prospect of seeing more of Kuntz's own early work is to be celebrated.

  1. This is great news! I look forward to buying game stuff, and OSRIC is my preferred system (because it's the closest to the 1E game that I actually run). I'm not so interested in history or in posters, though.

The Blackmoor dungeons - or a version of them - were published during the 3E days. Arneson was involved.

  2. Not that I want to be a downer, but I think I've seen more announcements of future things related to Rob than I've seen publications since he shut down Pied Piper Publishing. I think he said my order was the last one out the door!

I hope I am just looking at the wrong places, for as would also love to see that early material be published and shown to a greater audience.

    1. That is exactly what I told Rob when I came up with this publishing plan.We are going to get all of his material under the OSRIC 1st edition AD&D banner and all under one publishing house. These are be the places where all of it is being published right now: https://www.legendsofroleplaying.com/ and https://www.tlbgames.com/ Hope you find something you like!

  3. There have been a lot of previous announcements about publishing this IP (plus the actual DVD-ROM release a few years back that showed just how incomplete and fragmentary the documentary artifacts are - which is to say that anything even remotely "playable" that comes out of this IP will necessarily have to be largely newly-written material at best "inspired by" memories of stuff from the 70s). By this point it feels to me like getting your hopes up over any announcement from Rob Kuntz has entered "Lucy and the football" territory.

  4. You know that there are actual products that are available right now that were produced from this agreement? Nine new products and more on the way. They are available here, along with a lot of other products we have published and distributed for Rob, at https://www.legendsofroleplaying.com/ and here https://www.tlbgames.com/ And I think you will find that the newly released adventure he wrote is pretty fantastic: https://www.legendsofroleplaying.com/collections/legends-of-roleplaying-adventures/products/lr1-beyond-the-living-room-by-robert-j-kuntz. My own group playtested it over 5 game sessions and had a blast. Working with Jeff Dee and Darlene for the art was great too. Hope you'll give it a chance! Futures Bright, Paul

    1. Great, but why two different sites? With all the dozens of different ventures, partnerships and the like that RJK has entered over the last couple of decades, it is difficult enough as it is to keep track of where to find his products.

    2. Also, will any of the modules be available as PDF:s?

    3. Howdy Martin, TLB Games handles his greater collection of products and is a bit of odds and ends as far as packaging: DVD Archive, Posters, and RPG history publications. Legends of Roleplaying will carry all of his adventures (23 of them), plus those of several other TSR folks. That makes packaging and managing fulfillment a lot more efficient. We need that too with over 100 packages going out today alone! There are specific parameters for when items move to pdf but they are all going to be print first, with all new art by Erol Otus, Jeff Dee, Darlene, Jeff Easley, Harry Quinn, Dave LaForce, Steve Sullivan, and more. All with be OSRIC compatible. Futures Bright, Paul

  6. Although punctuated with various delays, Rob has definitely gotten some of his stuff out there. I'm eager to hold some of these treasures in my hands.

  7. How is the open game license being handled in these works? As OSRIC is built on open content.
