Traveller Starter Pack

In the coming weeks, I plan to write a lot more about Traveller, both because it's a roleplaying game I know, love, and play – and because it's a roleplaying game that doesn't get enough attention in my opinion. To that end, I'd like to direct your attention to the Traveller Starter Pack, available for free through the Mongoose Publishing website.

The Pack consists of PDF versions of the 72-page Traveller's Explorer Edition and two complete adventures, Stranded and Death Station. The Explorer's Edition is a pared down version of the Traveller Core Rulebook, providing everything you need to play the two adventures. The adventures themselves are updated versions of two Classic Traveller scenarios, Marooned/Marooned Alone and (of course) Death Station, the latter of which is among my favorite Traveller adventures of all time

The idea behind the Starter Pack is to give people interested in Traveller an opportunity to read and make use of the current edition of the rules without the need to spend any money. It's a great idea in my opinion, which is why I'm sharing this information here. I'd love to see Traveller more widely played, so anything that helps in that endeavor is good in my book. If you're curious about Traveller, the Starter Pack is a terrific, no-cost way to investigate it further.

  2. Sounds good. I downloaded the 3 LBB from DTRPG several years ago for free and I've read through them a couple of times and used the chargen system but never played a game. Maybe tike I did.

  3. I keep hoping to stumble across some physical books, too many people speak highly of this, but I am basically physical only...

    1. This book includes all of the rules from the 1981 edition of the game, plus additional Referee advice and a couple of sample adventures. It was originally published in the '80s in this form. You will note that a hardcover print on demand is available for just twenty American dollars (plus shipping).

    2. The Traveller Book is probably the greatest thing on DriveThru at the moment and possibly one of the greatest RPG products ever made.

  4. I have a longstanding dislike for Mongoose (based on shenanigans involving their long-defunct miniatures games - I can nurse a grudge for a very long time) but I have to admit they've done more for Traveler's popularity than anyone since GDW closed down. Be interesting to see what the modern sales figures look like and whether they've approached the peak way back in the early days.

    1. I have my own (different) objections to Mongoose Traveller, but they're in terms of product. In terms of longer-term business issues, I do accept that they're probably the best/least-worst option out there for Traveller's future, and hope they flourish!

  5. Just as I finish my clean-ups on my house rules for CT '81. Of course. Still, will be fun to look at.
