Two weeks from today, Gamehole Con kicks off once again! Just like last year, I’ll be leaving my northern redoubt and heading to Madison, Wisconsin for four days of gaming and, just as importantly, the chance to meet up with friends, acquaintances, and, I hope, a few regular readers of this blog.
I’ve said before that I’m not much of a convention-goer by nature. I know how important cons were to the early spread of the hobby, but I’ve always been shy and introverted, so big gatherings don’t naturally appeal to me. That’s part of why I like Gamehole Con so much: it strikes a good balance. It’s simultaneously small enough that you can easily find the people you’re looking for, but large enough that you can disappear into the crowd when you want to (and I often do). One of my friends once called it “human sized,” and I think that’s exactly right.
That said, what really draws me to Madison isn’t just the games; it’s the people. The Internet makes it easy to keep in touch with fellow RPG enthusiasts, but nothing compares to being face-to-face. Most of my gaming these days is online – and I genuinely love that – but there’s something uniquely satisfying about sitting at a real table, rolling real dice, and sharing a few hours of roleplaying in person. It’s a terrific social experience, and, honestly, I think we could all use more of that. It’s good for the soul.
As I did last year, I’ll have much more to share about my time at the convention once I’m back. With luck, the experience will help keep me energized through the remainder of 2025. I’ve got a lot of irons in the fire right now – the Grognardia anthologies, the second edition of Thousand Suns, Secrets of sha-Arthan, and Dream-Quest – and while I remain excited about all of them, I won’t deny that keeping these projects moving forward alongside this blog can be demanding. A little outside encouragement goes a long way.
With that in mind, I’m running a sale over at DriveThruRPG. Everything is 30% off until the end of October 9. The sale helps cover the costs of my trip to Madison, but more than that, it’s an opportunity for readers to pick up some of my existing work at a discount. If you’ve ever thought about grabbing a title or two, now’s a good time. And, of course, if you’re not in a position to do so, simply reading the blog, commenting, and sharing it with others is also a tremendous form of support.
Either way, I’m grateful for everyone who takes the time to stop by here. I’m looking forward to reporting back from Gamehole Con, as well as to rolling some real dice with real people once again.
My best friend and I went to Origins this year after a six year hiatus and we had a blast. Met up with folks that we haven't seen since 2019, but it was just like where we left off.
ReplyDeleteBeing Origins 50th anniversary and we only live about 2 hrs up the road in the Cleveland area, we HAD to go.
The best part: met up with a group we've played with in the past called Boar's Head Games. They've ran Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, Lost Cavers of Tsojcanth, and Against the Giants, just to name a few. They run a really good game. All of them old school gamers too.
This year one of their adventures was an original dungeon crawl through an ancient temple complex. It was steeped in World of Greyhawk lore, which I love. We discovered that the temple dated back before the Rain of Colorless Fire and the Twin Cataclysms, probably from the beginnings of the Suel Empire.
Finding out all of this sent chills down my spine. It was soo cool how everything unfolded. It was like being ten years old again. One of the best adventures I ever played.
That sounds incredible!
DeleteWhy did the bundles end up more expensive than their components bought individually?
ReplyDeleteI think it's just a quirk of the way the discounts are applied, unfortunately.
DeleteDear James .. Speaking of your published game systems and supplements .. what ever became of 'Colonial Gothic'? .. Is that setting still of interest? .. Cheers. Matthew.
ReplyDeleteColonial Gothic, so far as I know, is still being published by Rogue Games. It was the brainchild of Richard Iorio and something to which I contributed only a little in its early days.
DeleteAre you running anything at GHC? And can we expect Ken St. Andre at the table?
ReplyDeleteNo, I am not. The last time I planned to run something at Gamehole Con, I got hit by a car the day before I was scheduled to fly to Madison and I can't take that risk again :)
DeleteOof. As someone who has enjoyed the experience of being hit by a car - while minding my own business on the sidewalk, mind - I can appreciate that cosmic crossing of fingers in your reasoning.
DeleteI was fortunate to have suffered only a very minor injury but the experience is not one I wish to repeat. More seriously, I do wish to run some games at GHC in the future, but I also really enjoy the opportunity to play, which I don't get to do as often I'd like.
DeleteI will be there as well. Perhaps we can get together with Victor.
ReplyDeleteI was looking at the preview of Thousand Suns to see what it has that I could make use of in the Classic Traveller setting/campaign I’m working on. I see it has an Adventure Generator section that is a few pages long. What does that consist of?
ReplyDeleteIt's just a bunch of nested random tables that create a framework about what the characters are tasked with doing, where, what tries to impede them, and who the opposition is. It's useful as a jumping off point but not anything revolutionary.
DeleteThanks. I’m going to pick up the Excellent Travelling Volumes (love that you use the double l’s), but I am not sure Thousand Suns provides anything I can use.
DeleteIs there an Excellent Travelling Volume 7? DriveThru has 1-6 and 8-13…
DeleteThere is. Drop me an email at jdmaliszewskiATgmail.com and I will send it to you.
