Part 3 of my review of Carcosa will appear tomorrow as planned, but there's a good chance, owing to a variety of reasons, that it won't be posted early in the day but rather much later. My apologies for the delay.
I think it would have been enough to say that you agreed with the alignment system and leave it at that. The way you seemed to fault it for not allaying controversy -- in the part of the review that was not supposed to be about the controversy -- makes me skeptical of the objectivity of the rest of it.
As regards the comments, perhaps you could set up a final, no-holds-barred comments post explicitly as a kind of cage match to let folks get it out of their system. I didn't see any of the comments that you deleted from the first post, but I must say I am curious as to what the more strident readers have to say.
I've not read Carcosa myself, but I'll probably be picking it up at some point. I'm definitely enjoying your reviews.
Weird. how do they render that in the art? (I always pictured Ulfire as being painfully bright magenta, and Jale as being pastel green, but warm like a dark red).
There must have been a good reason for closing the comments field. Although I would have solved the situation by leaving things there and handing out bans, this is James's blog.

I make no claims to objectivity in anything I write, especially my reviews. However, my review will be fair, which is something we haven't seen much of with regard to Carcosa.

I closed the comments, because they had already started to get heated before I'd even posted a single word of praise or criticism for Carcosa's actual content. In addition, a couple of people saw fit to engage in some good old fashioned ad hominem arguments about Geoffrey McKinney and I don't tolerate that kind of stuff here.
I'd love to just ban people, but, unless I'm missing it, there doesn't seem to be any function in Blogger's default comments system that allows me to do so.
James, I just wanted to say thank you for trying to foster a civil discussion about this book. It's unfortunate it doesn't seemed to have worked out, but I really appreciate that you did make the effort. I'm enjoying your review of the book, as well.
Like the first of the little black Traveller books, Supplement V: CARCOSA has no interior art. CARCOSA does have a cover illustration, though. Go here and scroll down to see a substandard scan of the cover: http://odd74.proboards76.com/index.cgi?board=workshop&action=display&thread=1433
I should think that if, after months of writing and nearly 400 posts, my approach could be in any compared to the worst examples of journalistic excess, you haven't been paying much attention.
Not enjoying the lack of comments.

But well written and with good points as always.
I'm quite enjoying the review. Anyway, did you mean that there are Jale and Ulfire-skinned people in that setting? I have to admit, that's sorta cool.
ReplyDeleteYes, there are indeed Jale-skinned and Ulfire-skinned people in the world of Carcosa. Dolm-skinned, too.
ReplyDelete:)
I hope everything is okay James!

I just assumed that comments had intentionally been disabled on the Carcosa review posts??
ReplyDeleteAllan.

ReplyDeleteYep. Just busy yesterday and unable to complete Part 3 in time. Expect it later today.

ReplyDeleteBah, I accidentally deleted a comment here I did not intend and it's to that comment I was responding in my reply above.
ReplyDeleteI hate technology sometimes.
