Conan the Barbarian: The Musical

Several people sent me links to this today, so I thought I'd share it. I have to admit I found it quite hilarious.

  1. The scary part about this is that it actually sorta works....

  2. The humor is where? There are no funny lines, just a poor Ah-Nuld impression doing lines from the film. Does it help to hate the film? An ounce of clever wit would have gone a lot farther here than what was done with it. I give it a C -.

Them calling Thulsa a wizard is also very wrong. We all know he's a fighter/MU!

  3. Good stuff!

    "The humor is where?"

    It's a musical. About Conan.

  4. Akrasia: oh! hahahahahahahahahaha!

With both a Spider-Man and Batman musical in the works for Broadway, you are gonna have to do better than just relying on the concept of Conan as a musical for laughs, unless you laugh at weather reports. Mad TV's worst bomb skits are usualy funnier than this IMHO.

Come now, Brunomac: surely the juxtaposition of Conan the Barbarian to a Broadway musical context is funny enough in itself? It's like that musical Planet of the Apes The Simpsons did.

That said, I think CtB lends itself well to a musical. It has the sort of archetypal plot you'd expect, opportunities for solo and ensemble performances, it's very theatrical. Just adapt Poledouris' themes into showstopping musical numbers.

That said, I think Domine did a much better job doing a Conan musical.

  7. Taran: Yeah, but the Planet of the Apes musical was FUNNY. C'mon, "I hate every ape I see from Chimpan-A to Chimpan-Z..."

One funny line. It's all I ask!

but you are damn right, I think a Conan musical would be awesome. If you can do a serious musical based on Man of La Mancha, you could do a good one on Conan (and not stricly for laughs...lots of Wagnerian vibe would be great.

  8. Hey, you were linked from National Review Online! Cool!

I suspect several of their writers get Gygaxian now and again.

  9. True enough, Brunomac. That's one of my top ten musical moments in The Simpsons. "Doctor Zaius, Doctor Zaius!"

I think CtB would work wonderfully as a Les Miz-style "opera." There isn't a single dud in Poledouris' score: each track could be expanded to a whole showstopping number, especially using the Varese Sarabande edition.

That's probably my only problem with this video: they didn't use the score. You'd think of all the Arnold movies you'd keep the score of for the musical...

  10. I'm waiting for Bubba Hotep the musical. With such hits as:
"Things are free....if you steal them."
"I'm sore because my pecker has one."
"The big bad bug in my bed pan blues"
    "Don't cry for me Kimosabe."

  11. It's over now, but there was a stupendously funny "hop hopera" called Barbarian! performed in NYC in May:

disclaimer: I had several minor roles.
