A common complaint about old school gamers is that we're, as a whole, cheap, disinterested in anything that wasn't published 25+ years ago, and don't really game much anyway. So, here's my question for today: what was the last gaming purchase you made that you actually used? The answer doesn't have to be an old school product, though, obviously, I'm much more interested in hearing about which old school items are getting bought and used.
I'm not fully offline today, as I usually am on Fridays. I have too many emails and comments to deal with from earlier this week, as well as some work that requires being online, so I can't unplug completely.
The last one I bought was Harnmaster, a few months ago. I haven't used it yet but there is a group that plays it in my area, so hopefully soon.
ReplyDeleteHmm, I think it was Rippers for Savage Worlds, but I am planning on picking up Labyrinth Lord one day real soon. I was planning on running the Red Box for my new gaming group sometime soon, and if they enjoy it I might springboard off onto either LL, AD&D2e, or just full RC.
ReplyDeleteI did play through the solitaire scenario in LotFP a couple of weeks ago, if that counts. Other than that, it would have been one of the supplements for Exalted 2e, probably The Books of Sorcery, Vol. IV: The Roll of Glorious Divinity I: Gods & Elementals.
ReplyDeleteI don't really consider myself an old-school gamer. The last RPG product I purchased was D&D Essentials: Heroes of the Fallen Lands, which was released earlier this week, and I plan to use it in the very near future.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever purchased an old-school product, although I did pay $7 or so to have my pdf of Labyrinth Lord printed and bound at the local Staples. So I guess that's the last old-school product I've paid money to use.
I bought extra copies of S3 and WG4 about 8 months ago, so I wouldn't have to use my collection copies. Ran them both for a local 3E group, converting the few things needing conversion on the fly. Turned out better than I had hoped.
ReplyDeleteLabyrinth Lord and the AEC, and some mags (Knockspell, Oubliette, etc.) probably.
ReplyDeleteMake that S4 and WG4.
ReplyDeleteThe last gaming purchase I made were the Molvay/Cook BX books.
ReplyDeleteI'm not as hard core as that might seem, though. I got them 3 years ago from an online used book dealer.
The last new product I bought and used for RPGs, however, were the d20 Past and d20 Apocalypse books for d20 Modern.
Dying earth by pelgrane press, some six or seven years ago...
ReplyDeleteTwo items, both quite old: Ready Ref Sheets from Judges Guild and the Handbook of Traps from Dragontree Press
ReplyDeleteLamentations of the Flame Princess Weird Fantasy Role Playing Game...
ReplyDeleteBRP Rome and Crusaders of the Amber Coast by Alephtar games. I bought them on the same day a couple months ago, and they both fit remarkably well with my alternate earth campaign world.
ReplyDeleteThis is a bit of an unfair question. What do you mean by "actually used?"
ReplyDeleteLast purchase that I used as written (with a few adjustments) in play:
DCC 14 Dungeon Interludes from Goodman Games.
Last purchase I used as inspiration for monsters, background material and a location in my ongoing campaign that the players have yet to find:
The People of the Pit from Brave Halfling
Last purchase I used as an excuse to drop a treasure map into a treasure hoard I really want my players to find:
Hammers of the God by Mr. Raggi
LotFP WF RPG. I haven't played a session of it, but am mining it for ideas.
ReplyDelete"Pandemic", a wonderful little cooperative board game by Z-Man Games.
ReplyDeleteThe 3 core Pathfinder books. Before that Mouse Guard. I did just get copies of AD&D (3 core books), Original Ravenloft and the B/X D&D books though, literally ordered yesterday. I'm running the Ravenloft module for the local October D&D Meetup.
ReplyDeleteI haven't bought any gaming materials in years, relying instead on various free pdf versions. It's only because I'm horribly poor at the moment, the fact being that if I had money to spend I'd be knee deep in LotFP, Dungeons '@' Dragons, Goblinoid, Mythmere and Paizo products galore, North Wind Adventures, etc.
ReplyDeleteI bought the new D&D4 Red box and Essentials recently. Prior to that it was Advanced Players Guide (Pathfinder), Smallville and DC Adventures.
ReplyDeleteThough that has all pretty much blown my RPG budget for the rest of the year.
Advanced Players Guide for the Pathfinder RPG.
ReplyDeleteI gave VERY serious consideration to LotFP, but realized I had no players for that and so could not justify the expense. Yet. I did download the free PDFs and they are next on my reading list (right after the Adventure Burner for Burning Wheel).
Heortling Mythology.
ReplyDeleteGame product in general was the Game of Thrones board game, which I purchased last weekend and played last night.
ReplyDeleteRPG product specifically: Song of Ice and Fire Campaign Guide by Green Ronin.
Neither are old school, that's for certain.
Fight On! magazine
ReplyDeleteThough I just reacquired my Moldvay/Cook boxed sets, the last gaming purchase that I actually used was ICONS (kind of new-school/kind of old-school supers).
ReplyDeleteBarring the S&W rulebooks and some stuff I lifted from Fight On/ Knockspell, I have used very little of the multitude of OSR products I have bought (Several systems, supplements, and adventures). I'll likely sell most of it soon, keeping only the 'zines, R&R, and S&W:WB softcover.
ReplyDeleteUltimately I guess I just don't like everyone else's "houseruled" D&D, adventure writing, or simply prefer the original format/s.
My latest purchase I'm actually using is "Hammerfast" from WOTC to utilize for S&W:WB. It's a sandbox-like product, and has almost no stats, so pretty easy to work with any system. I also have some of the 4E essentials products on order for a re-boot of my 4E game towards the Holidays.
S&W Whitebox, an old, well-worn copy of Magic Realm (board game), Castle Ravenloft (another board game), and a small, but steady stream of both fantasy and sci-fi miniatures.
ReplyDeleteProducts I've bought that are seeing actual play include StoneHell Dungeon, and pretty much all of the LOTFP catalog (I have a journal on Dragonsfoot - beedo's gothic greyhawk - posting some actual play). Products in the queue will include Cursed Chateau (the author escapes me... ).
ReplyDeleteOne of the helpful things is seeing reviews - lots of reviews. There is a flood of OSR product out there and it's important to be discriminating.
LotFP, FreeMarket, and the Adventure Burner for Burning Wheel. I bought them all around the same time, and I've used them all.
ReplyDeleteI have used all my Mongoose Traveller stuff. I bought a copy of Lara's Tower (Judges Guild) and suitably modified it for a Con game at FanExpo.
ReplyDeleteFor me the Old School products are only good, if they are usable. Whereas, the slick new school stuff is unusable in my old school games... I would sooner buy an artbook than the latest hash up of a Monster Manual to inspire my games. That is what I think is cleverness behind GG's Dungeon Alphabet.
I bought Bighara's Skull Mountain, which I enjoyed enough to strategically place it in my campaign world. In fact, just last session one of my players irked some local priests (thanks to Jeff Rient's Carousing rules!) and ended up the lucky recipient of a Quest spell to go rescue someone from it, so I suspect we'll be using it fairly soon.
ReplyDeleteMutants & Masterminds (2E). I am mostly a 'virtual' role-player at this point in time. I read RPG books for entertainment and review them on my YouTube channel. I also argue on message forums and Usenet groups. :)
ReplyDeleteI think either the Dungeon Alphabet or the Esoteric Creature Generator. The thing is, nowadays my interest in the hobby is almost exclusively on the DIY/freely shared end of the spectrum. By and large trying to sell me RPGs and add-ons is like trying to sell canned salmon to a fly-fishing enthusiast....
ReplyDeleteWas inspired to find a copy of the Old Blue Box, by your postings of it. Then decided to use it and a little bit of LL to run my kids through B2.
ReplyDeleteI also recently purchased Greyhawk Adventures making my 1ed set complete. I'll be running a Greyhawk campaign with a group of guys at a FLGS.
1. Pathfinder Bestiary was my most recent purchase that was used at the gaming table on Sunday 9/12.
ReplyDelete2. After starting to DM a group through module S3 last Friday 9/17 using AD&D/OSRIC, I opted to buy the OSRIC softcover book off of Lulu. It's in the mail. It will be used the next time we pick up this game, which is scheduled for Friday 10/29.
I guess Labyrinth Lord, or my backup copy of Savage Worlds Explorer's Edition where my last useful purchases, which date back a couple years.
ReplyDeleteThat's not to say I haven't made plenty of non-useful purchases.
@Paul: Dammit, Kasshim!
Vincent Baker's Apocalypse World (just ran it Weds)
ReplyDeleteMy problem is one of time. I’ve picked up some really cool stuff that I’d love to run, but we only play one to three times a month nowadays, and much of that time is spent socializing.
ReplyDeleteSo I’ve used Chagmat and Fell Pass, because they were available when I started laying down hints in the sandbox. If they choose to explore the “Lost City” next session, it’ll be the Caverns of Thracia.
None of these are recent purchases.
That said, I have already slotted Hammers of the God as a potential quest adventure, because it fits so well with the tone of our current game.
And bits/pieces of stuff from Fight On! is finding its way in, too. They’ll be meeting a customs official inspired by an article in Fight On! And I’m thinking that Slimy Lake is a segment of the road they’re currently on, too.
Don't remember which was which, so I'll give you the last two:
ReplyDeleteI bought a set of five 20-sided d10s. I just like them better than the 10-sided d10s.
I also bought and have used a used copy of Unearthed Arcana for the 1e game I'm in. I needed to look up spells that I'm not interested in anyway.
Savage Worlds Explorer's Edition, although all we've really done so far is created characters. Prior to that, the Pathfinder Core Rulebook and Bestiary.
ReplyDeleteWishing now I'd found this blog and learned of the Old School movement prior to that Pathfinder purchase. I'm running games for my kids, and they have told me they are happy with Pathfinder and don't want to have to learn another system. I can sympathize, and we're having fun, but wow, 3e and PFRPG are so incredibly cumbersome.
Labyrinth Lord looks awfully appealing. I started with Holmes in '79, and I would have run that if I had still had a copy.
4e makes me ill.
That's a tough one. I play every week now, but I'm using BASH (a very rules light supers game) which I bought like three years ago. In the interim I've probably bought 5-6 other things, most of which will never see direct use at the table. I bought the 4e Dark sun stuff, mostly because I really like DS. I think the 4e stuff is nice, but I'd never run it using 4e, and it's more likely to be a stop over on a S&W world hopping type adventure than a full on game. I do have and have and used and will use again (after Bash is over) the S&W White Box set.
ReplyDeleteMy last purchase was Swords & Wizardry White Box set; as for playing, I've been running my campaign every two weeks for the last four years.
ReplyDeleteKing Arthur Pendragon core rulebook v5.1. It f'n rocks!
ReplyDeleteThe most recent product purchased that I have sat down and ran was Tunnels & Trolls 7.5 with the Delvers' Pack add-on. I'm prepping for a Dark Dungeons campaign with my hardcover of that book and Keep on the Borderlands. As for other recent purchases that I may not have run yet, but have at least read for pleasure, Basic Fantasy, Delta Green: Targets of Opportunity, Wild Talents 2E, Eclipse Phase, Sufficiently Advanced, Role Aids: Demons, and Labyrinth Lord and the LL:AEC hardcovers are en route.
ReplyDeleteLast purchase I made (and I did actually use it) was Adventure Burner for Burning Wheel.
ReplyDeleteI actually haven't purchased many old-school products, and other than the OD&D PDFs, really haven't used any of them.
But then my purchasing habits have changed dramatically. I used to buy everything (well, not everything, but I sure tried). Now, I consider carefully if I will ever actually use it.
Frank
I play 4E these days, but the last thing I actually bought was Burning Wheel.
ReplyDeleteLamentations of the Flame Princess, Death Frost Doom, and Hammer of the Gods. I haven't played them yet, but am building a setting including my own dungeon locations and have players ready to go when I'm done.
ReplyDeleteThe last one I purchased and have already used is the DC Heroes Role Playing Game that just came out, using the Mutants and Masterminds 3rd edition rules.
The last game purchase that I actually used? Well, I tried out Mutants and Masterminds, but determined that the extended character creation wasn't for us. It's like somebody decided that 3rd edition D&D wasn't quite complex enough, so they added a couple dozen extra wrinkles in there.
ReplyDeleteBefore that I bought Dark Heresy, which we found much more to our liking. One of my players is a huge Warhammer 40k fan, so he's happy with the purchase as well.
Labyrinth Lord is probably the most recent I've actually used in play yet. LotFP:WFRPG, Cursed Chateau, Death Frost Doom, and Delta Green: Targets of Opportunity all showed up in the past 2 weeks, haven't had a chance to review them yet. Stonehell should be showing up soon as well.
ReplyDeleteWednesday night I looked up the effect of a 19 Dexterity in the LL Advanced Edition Companion. I bought that when my FLGS got it in stock a few weeks ago. Turns out the 19 Dex only lasted a few minutes when the same player ended up rolling 'Obese' on the Arduin body type chart and got knocked back down to 18.
ReplyDeletethe quantity of my purchases is in inverse relationship to the regularity of my actual gaming. This past year I've been gaming a lot more than in previous years, and the buying has dried up ... mostly. I've been mostly homebrewing my own stuff - houserules and a megadungeon.
ReplyDeletebut the last purchases that saw actual use were Matt Finch's awesome Pod Caverns of the Sinister Shroom and the AD&D 2e Monstrous Manual which I bought to supplement and inspire my creative processes. BTW my players ended up fleeing the Pod Caverns after a run-in with the pod men. They are still too intimidated to return.
Most recent purchase I actually used?
ReplyDeleteNow remember, this is coming from someone who has a 1st edition copy of Champions and prefers Hero's 4th edition to what comes later, and who's favorite fantasy setting is the "Known World."
Heroes of the Fallen Lands and the 4e Rules Compendium. I'm running Encounters at the local store.
Do I want the young gamers who walk in to buy Fasa's old Star Trek RPG? Sure.
Do I want them to buy Colonial Gothic and Savage Worlds? Most certainly.
Do I buy a ton of game stuff every year? Yes.
Do I play often? Weekly at Encounters and twice a month in my decade long campaign.
I don't think I would actually pass the doorman at the Secret Old School Games Club, as the earliest form of D&D I played was the black box basic set, then the dreaded AD&D2 for all of four hours. I have run and played Call of Cthulhu for years though, and am very snooty indeed about Trail of Cthulhu, so I might be able to get in on a technicality.
ReplyDeleteAnyway...
The last new games product I bought was probably Lure of the Expanse, a campaign for the Rogue Trader rpg. I haven't actually used it, but I was running Rogue Trader at the time. The last (not new) games product I bought was a copy of Sacraments of Evil for the aforementioned Call of Cthulhu, and published in the space year 1993. I haven't used it, in fact I've barely read it as I've been too busy of late to give it much time.
Song of Blades and Heroes & supplements
ReplyDeleteThe Adruin Grimoires from a used bookstore.
ReplyDeleteOops. I forgot that I bought both Hammers of the God and the Random Esoteric Creature Generator in recent weeks. I haven't used Hammers yet (and to be honest, probably won't, although it is an excellent adventure), but I have used the generator to spice up a Savage Worlds npc, a suggestion which came from Sir Geoffrey of Carcosa, I think, over on the LotFP forums.
ReplyDeleteSkull Mountain
ReplyDeleteBest of White Dwarf Scenarios 1 and 2
Stonehell
I'm using these as idea-starters.
I'm thinking about buying the 1E DM's Guide and Player's Handbook, which I owned a long time ago and I currently have in pdf form, but if I do buy them, I probably won't use them much. They'll probably end up safe in a box.
This is a lot harder to answer than I thought. The last thing I bought is Red Sands for Savage Worlds, but I haven't used that yet (on schedule for next month). I received a lot of good Christmas and birthday presents, which I have used or have plans to use.
ReplyDeleteThe last thing that I think I bought myself was likely at Origins, but a cardboard dice tower is the only thing I can remember. Maybe there was something for Star Fleet Battles? I went into Origins, and came out with, an attitude opposed to buying or learning any new games.
Most recent purchase that I actually have used: GDW's Dark Nebula board-game.
ReplyDeleteMost recent purchase that I plan to use: 1st edition Top Secret box. The plan is to run a short set of adventures in Sprechenhaltestelle set in the 1950s a la Ian Fleming novels. Kind of a palate cleanser from our group's other games.
It's true I tend toward old-school game purchases... but not out of dislike for modern games. Its just that my friends pretty much take care of things from that angle.
Labyrinth Lord, Advanced Edition Companion, Mutant Future, Starships & Spacemen, OSRIC, Tomb of the Iron God, Cursed Chateau, everything by LotFP, and a bunch of modules from Mythmere/Black Blade. All of these bought in the past six months. I've used LL, AEC, and Tomb of the Iron God.
ReplyDeleteI've used Lamentations of the Flame Princess: Weird Fantasy Role-Playing a lot. Then again, I didn't pay anything for it, so I guess it doesn't count.
The most recent old school purchases I've made have been LotFP and the B/X Companion. But I haven't actually used any of the old school stuff I've purchased over the past year or so. I need to see if I can get something started at my FLGS.
ReplyDeleteOf stuff that I've actually used: the Pathfinder core rulebook and 3:16 Carnage Amongst the Stars.
Ed Green
Define used?
ReplyDeleteMy definition would be if I get something I can use in the games I play.
Hamlets hit points, which i just received yesterday and honestly I haven't cracked, but if it's as good as Mr. Laws previous works I'll use it.
Death Valley Free Prison for CyberSpace. Super cool post apocalyptic setting for a campaign I'm dreaming up.
By these comments it looks like many old-schoolers DO buy things but DON'T often play them. Just as I suspected.
ReplyDeleteFWIW, I love reading and reminiscing about 1E but I only buy and play 3.5 (2 or 3 times a month). I do play with the same group of friends I played 1E and 2E with 25 years ago.
I played a session in Stonehell last night, using the LotFP rules.
ReplyDeleteLast "new" old-school purchase that I used: Stonehell Dungeon (three game sessions so far)
ReplyDeleteLast "new: old-school purchase: The Wilderness Alphabet
The last was the AEC for LL (one of my players really wanted to play an illusionist). There's so much more OSR stuff I'd love to pick up but, alas, one must pay the bills.I usually allow myself one or two new game purchases a month. So far I've snagged LL & the AEC, the S&W White Box from BH, your own Cursed Chateau, Rob Conley's Majestic Wilderlands and Points of Light, and Michael Curtis's Dungeon Alphabet. I would've liked to pick up Raggi's LotFP box but it was just too much money. Hammers of the God and the B/X companion are up there on my wish list.
ReplyDeleteThe last RPG item I purchased and actually used was the ICONS superhero RPG.
ReplyDeleteThe last item I purchased was Deathwatch.
Alright, neither of these are old-school, but I have been waiting since 1987 for the Warhammer 40K RPG. Does that count?
I use Fight On! as the players in my campaign have spent 8 out of the last 9 sessions making forays into its The Darkness Beneath megadungeon. This Sunday the players have decided to take a job that will likely lead them to Expeditious Retreat Press's AA#1 Pod-Caverns of the Sinister Shroom.
ReplyDeleteI guess I don't really fit the old-school mold described above. I still play AD&D quite a bit. For years, I said if they just brought AD&D (1st edition, of course) back into print I would buy product again. Consequently, I've purchased every single print OSRIC adventure to date. Vote with your dollars.
Bought copy of AD&D Player Handbook to assist in converting AD&D modules (like Bone Hill & Hommlet) to B/X.
ReplyDeleteOther than that, Labyrinth Lord (though I mainly use Moldvay/Cook I have begun to incorporate things like LL's clerical spell progression, among other things), plus other OSR stuff like Fight ON & KNockspell I have used for ideas/places/inspiration in current campaign, though I always change stuff a bit...
Lots 1E and 2E D&D books, modules and accessories, back when Paizo was selling them. Since WotC banned the sale of their old PDFs, I haven't spent a penny.
ReplyDeleteMy most recent purchase was the Fight On! hardbacks.
ReplyDeleteAs for gaming, I have most of my needs covered but find something to play every weekend!
Dark Heresy main book with a few supplements here and there.
ReplyDeleteMongoose Traveller, the first edition I've ever owned.
ReplyDeleteAnd the Dungeon Alphabet.
Two items: still use my first edtion AD&D rules from when the kaiser was in power, and my Advanced Squad Leader stuff. Still play AD&D once a mo. and play ASL every other week.
ReplyDeleteThe Advanced Player's Guide for Pathfinder. Bought it when it came out last month or thenabouts and used it pretty much immediately in my game.
ReplyDeleteI just got LotFP a couple days ago, and am doing the solo dealio to see what he's doing to introduce totally new players. I hope to run a campaign in a few months.
ReplyDeleteBefore that, the Gems supplement pdf, which now that our party found some gems I used on Monday (this definitely fits into the cheap category). Before that was the hardcover versions of LL and AEC, which I use constantly.
I didn't buy them, our DM did, but the LL campaign I'm in currently is in Stonehell, uses the Brave Halfling Bard, and has hit Death Frost Doom (which we fled after a death in the first room ... hmm; maybe I'll start calling it Death First Room from here on out).
The last one I bought and played was Supers! by Simon Washbourne. I did, however, just buy Shadow, Sword and Spell but I am still in the process of reading it.
ReplyDeleteWell, I can't remember exactly when I got it, but I think the most recent RPG-related purchase that I have used is Background Noise, a PDF-only random background generator for fantasy adventurers. It is completely system neutral. In case I actually bought that longer ago than I think, it may be my Rolemaster Classic books, which I use in the Rolemaster 2nd edition game I play in.
ReplyDeleteProducts I'm currently using or just finished with:
ReplyDelete"Forge of Fury" - a 3e adventure I converted to 4e. Bought it on Ebay a year or two ago.
Labyrinth Lord - got both printings when they came out.
OSRIC - bought it early last year I think.
3e City State of the Invincible Overlord & Wilderlands of High Fantasy - several years ago. Using with OSRIC and LL.
4e Monster Manual 3 - bought when it came out a few months ago. Used the hill giant smasher stats in it.
And I'll soon be using BECMI adventure Where Chaos Reigns, converted to 3e. Bought it probably 3 years ago.
I often spend a lot of money on RPG stuff. The most useful recent purchase was a second blank Paizo flipmat last month, by far the best tool for using miniatures IMO, and I used it in a game Sunday before last.
I think the answer must be "Blank Paizo flipmat" :)
ReplyDeletePathfinder rule book, a "retro-clone" of 3.5. My players and I really like the fact that you can construct really cool characters with "3.75" - including monsters and whatnot - with a really "hi-res" and inspirational toolbox. However, we're somewhat torn, as playing these characters sometimes gets cumbersome and, since we're all making interesting folks rather than equally-effective characters, wonky math. I'm experimenting with converting the PCs to LL, but hippogriffs, ex-pirate gnomes and ogre magi don't always slot in so well...
ReplyDeleteThe latest stuff getting actual use at the moment it's probably a tie between Swashbucklers of the 7 Skies (Evil Hat Productions/Atomic Sock Monkey) and a combination of Ironclaw (Sanguine) rules and Runequest (Mongoose) background, since they are my two active games at the moment.
ReplyDeleteMy last purchase was The Laundry RPG (Cubicle 7), but like the majority of my gaming purchases probably won't get musch use beyond a one-shot to see how well it functions in practice.
I've been absurdly wrapped up lately but I had plans to play the new Paranoia a week back. Maybe once things are calm, or not, because it will be Halloween and I'm still hoping on Chaosium to let out Masks of Nyarlathotep. And I was playing Little Fears 2E earlier in the year. However, I wouldn't consider me the best example: Prior to the LF game, I hadn't played a roleplaying game in years. Board games yes. Video games yes.
ReplyDeleteParanoia was only selected because the gamers were not into the idea of playing S&W. No one I know is.
The Swords & Wizardry White Box box by Brave Halfling Publishing. It's not so much that I'm stingy as much as it's very easy to build your own materials for Old School games. I might pick up Hammers of the God soon.
ReplyDeleteBought and used extensively:
ReplyDeleteLabyrinth Lord Core rules, about 5 issues of Fight On!, and the Dungeon Alphabet.
Bought but haven't used yet: Stonehell, Random Esoteric Monster Generator (this one came 2 days ago and is gonna get used, like, tomorrow), and Hammers of the God.
I look forward to picking up Shane Mangus' sourcebook "Swords against the outer dark" when it eventually comes out. That's gonna be a ripper.
Advanced Edition Companion. And I love it.
ReplyDeleteI occasionally by other new RPG material, but mostly to borrow ideas from. Like the new Dark Sun campaign book, and those new D&D dungeon tiles are pretty useful.
I've purchased quite a few old school pdf products, the ones I've used so far are my Labrynth Lord book (actually purchased at a real store...sigh just like old days), my 0one blueprint Chaos Caverns...those things scream DIY, as well as the Dungeon Alphabet and STONEHELL. I'm also hoping to use LoTFP Death Frost Doom, and Matt Finch's Pod Caverns of the Sinister Shroom. The other purchase may not have seen the light of day in my game, but are there for inspiration. Personally I like using these products for two reasons a lack of time on my part, and I find my imagination muscles are just not what they used to be it these things help fire up the creative juices.
ReplyDeleteLL/AEC & Stonehell. I'm hoping to get to use a lot more stuff on a regular basis, shortly.
ReplyDeleteMy last used purchase was the floorplan PDF you linked a couple of weeks ago on here, actually--the Inked Adventures cut-up modular dungeon tiles basic set.
ReplyDeleteMy group is pretty excited about them!
Cursed Chateau. I think I bought it around Christmas last year and played it this summer.
ReplyDeleteDragonage RPG by Green Ronin. Not old school, but a nice (planned) 4 box set. Set 2 is in playtesting.
ReplyDeleteLast session (2 weeks ago), I used the Random Library Contents table from one of the Fight Ons, and some of the books from Hammers of the God. The week before that I was unprepared so I ran surface and first level of Stonehell.
ReplyDeleteI was going to get getting into running Shadowrun 2nd edition to try and "bring back the spice" in our group. They only want to play Pathfinder, which I do not like, so they now play somewhere else.
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, I bought a bunch of old Shadowrun. The quest to obtain it is a good distraction for me. My little brother died last Tuesday in my house and I am doing anything and everything I can to keep myself busy, including posting here, haha.
If anyone has any old Shadowrun stuff (1st or 2nd edition, only) they want rid of, let me know.
My most-recently-bought-and-used gaming product are the 6-squares-to-the-inch graph paper pads that created my latest level on for my version of Castle Greyhawk.
ReplyDeleteMost-recent published gaming product?: Pagan Publishing's _Delta Green: Targets of Opportunity_ arrived last week, from which I lifted some ideas for aforementioned mega-dungeon.
Allan.
OSRIC rulebook. I intend to run two adventures at a con and ADD1E / OSRIC will be one. The other a homebrew post-Civil War Cowboys & Cthulhu.
ReplyDeleteI will define "actually used" as "used in a game," rather than "purchased/read in anticipation of using someday." By that definition, I bought most of the Fading Suns series for a game I was running, and Faery's Tale which I've been playing with my daughter. I bought Star Wars d6 for her in anticipation of a game a friend will be running in "Father/offspring mode," that we're really looking forward to.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if Lamentations of the Flame Princess or Pathfinder material (advanced players guide) was the most recent purchases but I actually use Pathfinder and hope to actively use LotFP.
ReplyDeleteLL Advanced Edition Companion which I am bolting on to a Frankenstein's monster of a game that I set in Minaria. Before that it was Mouse Guard by Archaia Press.
ReplyDeleteBarbarians of Lemuria.
ReplyDeletePlayed it twice and my players ask me for more every week!
In the past year I have bought -- and used (either to actually play or to mine for ideas for ongoing games)-- the following:
ReplyDeleteSwords & Wizardry (both Core and WhiteBox)
Labyrinth Lord
OSRIC
Risus Deluxe
Barbarians of Lemuria
Palladium FRPG 1st Edition
All the issues of Knockspell and Fight On
Mouse Guard
Hyperborean Mice
Dragon Age
Ruins of Ramat
The Vile Worm
All of Raggi's stuff, including LotFP
About 40 or so old Judge's Guild products
Several hundred $$$ of PDFs from RPGNow
Don't even get me started on what I spent on my miniature wargaming, guitar, or reading addictions... ;)
S&W: White Box boxed set from Brave Halfling. I bought one in the spring for my oldest's seventh birthday and I bought one of the "limited edition starter sets" that John made available so that, whenever he and the rest of the homeschooling kids in the area get together, I've always got enough books.
ReplyDeleteI bought a bunch of stuff at NTRPG Con: all four issues of Knockspell, Matt Finch's City Encounters, his Adventure Design Deskbooks, XRP's creature book Malevolent and Benign, and the digest-sized copies of Tim Kask's new module Temple of the Weaver Queen, his High in the Hellgate Mountains, and Dennis Sustare's Ursined, Sealed, and Delivered.
I would have bought James Boney's White Dragon Run at NTRPG Con, but they sold out before I had a chance.
I've also bought a copy of The Village of Larm a few months back.
Oh...and I also grabbed at NTRPG Con a copy of Tadashi Ehara's Daimyo of 1867.
I wanted to run an epic module with an integrated game world for my group. Something reminiscent of the days of TOEE T1-4. I bought Dungeon Crawl Classics #51 Castle Whiterock from Goodman Games about 4 months ago. This is a fantastic dungeon crawl for 3E.
ReplyDeleteShadowrun, third edition, 1998. Bought 4th edition in 2008, I think, but never used it.
ReplyDeleteLamentations of the Flame Princess Weird Fantasy Role Playing Game. Just started up a campaign and it's the baseline for it.
ReplyDelete
