Ghouls About Town

The ever-amazing Russ Nicholson just completed a piece of artwork for Dwimmermount, depicting two ghouls -- technically, ghasts -- from the colony of them that infests levels 2A and 3A of the dungeon. Unsurprisingly, he did a superb job and I look forward to seeing what else he creates for me in the weeks to come.

  1. Ah, Russ Nicholson. Great artist. Brings me memories of the Fighting Fantasy books and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Many of the moodier pieces I recall from the FF books were his, and they set the tone for which I remember them. At the time, I didn't know about the connection between WFRP and Ian Livingston and Steve Jackson. Later when I learned that they wrote the FF books and founded Games Workshop, the Russ Nicholson connection was made clear.

"Come on in, step into my boudoir," they seem to be saying.

  4. Russ Nicholson's art is flippin ace and he's a top guy to boot! Got me two of his pieces myself. Nice work, love to see higher res versions. ;)

  5. Russ is probably my favorite old school artist; actually, he's one of my favorite artists period!

That's a great piece of art.

  6. Russ Nicholson is amazing!

(I may eventually have to get a copy of Dwimmermount simply for the art.)

  7. Agh, I didn't know this was a Dwimmermount post.

I've been avoiding them, because it will speed up my eventual purchase of the book and I don't need another RPG book!

    *sigh*

It's shaping up to be a piece of history, is what it looks like. Time to budget for it, I guess. It's inevitable.

  10. super awesome. has a great "old school" (a phrase that should be buried) feel. has the sickening-meticulous feel that some of the artwork in the fiend folio gave me as a kid.

  11. Wow! You got SUCH stars to illustrate Dwimmermount! The Warlock of Firetop Mountain was my first contact with Fighting Fantasy books, which led me to D&D later on... It also had an influence on my own work as an illustrator. Seeing who illustrates your book makes me even more impatient to get it...

  12. Wow! The second I saw this, I thought:Stepping through into the library, you see two shambling GHASTS, dressed in tattered finery. You hurredly draw your sword as they surge forward to attack! You must fight both GHASTS at once!FEMALE GHAST SKILL 8 STAMINA 9
MALE GHAST SKILL 9 STAMINAIf either GHAST hits you, turn to 145. If you defeat them both without taking a hit, turn to 32.

  13. Russ is the reason why the Fiend Folio is my favorite AD&D book.

  14. Russ's work defined the Fiend Folio for me. It made the book feel more mysterious and chock full of scary danger bad stuff. He is one of those rare talents who literally does not need to sign their work. You never have to wonder who the artist is. His work just leaps out and grabs. The detail is simply unimaginable.  Great job landing some of his work for Dwimmermount. Can't wait to get my grubby paws on that PDF.

  15. No one does the gruesome, gooey, details of the undead like Russ Nicholson!

  16. Wow, you have Nicholson on-board!
Now I'm starting to regret not getting a hard copy of Dwimmermount instead of just the PDF ;)

  17. Oh that is fantastic :) I do love his work, Russ Nicholson's Warlock of Firetop Mountain is why I'm still in this hobby thirty years later!

  18. Russ Nicholson is not only one of the most greatest and most iconic fantasy illustrators of all time, but he's still putting out great work 30+ years later. I hope he's still got another 30 years left in him!
