Smith as Smith

If this isn't the most terrific photograph ever, I don't know what is: E.E. "Doc" Smith dressed up as C.L. Moore's interplanetary rogue, Northwest Smith, at the 20th Worldcon in 1962.

  2. I love that the ray gun has a power cord. Traveller drew on some great source material, didn't it?

  3. I had heard about this photo.  Thanks for dragging it up.  Doc Smith doesn't look at all like how I pciture old N.W., though.

  4.  Me either, but I'm willing to cut Doc some slack, since he was 72 at the time. I hope I look as good!

  7. Just another fanboy wannabe! ;-)

That picture and H. Beam Piper's gunroom photo from the Altoona Trainyard newsletter are priceless.

  9. This goes along perfectly with a photo that I saw a few months ago (which, alas, I can't find a link for) of a 1970s-era Jack Kirby aggressively brandishing a Captain America shield.

I saved the image... if  my google-fu continues to come up empty, I'll repost it on my blog tonight.

  10. Could be a Star Frontiers laser too, with the belt pack power supply.

I love seeing these kinds of things.  I've never done cosplay, but I have friends who do, and I love seeing how far back it goes.

Also, I have considered doing the gray Lensman as a cosplay, and see Smith do this makes me really happy.
