This is another one that I read about but never got to play... my first real computer was a PC-XT I got as a graduation present in 1988. Always really wanted this one.
I put in a massive amount of time on this one (and Telengard).
Funny thing to me is that back then I could not be bothered with reading the booklets that came with games like this or Pool of Radiance for in game background and descriptive text- and I just wanted to move on with the gameplay. Nowadays I find it super interesting to read the manual entries and the gameplay really tiresome and only enjoy it in very small doses.
FWIW- you find this to play on the Internet Archive in C64 and other versions.
I played this a bit on a C-64. Can't say as it stands out very well in my memory, except perhaps as the first "CRPG" that confirmed my preference for roleplaying with others face to face at a table.
Always wanted to play this back in the day. Just got finished creating and running a D&D version of it based on my ideas after studying maps and Lore found on the internet. It was a riff on both this and a few old Dungeon Magazine modules featuring the Hivebrood and other insectoid races led by Insectares from an Insectoid planet in Jammerspace who had taken control of, among other things, the world's print media to wage a propaganda war against the other races of the world. My Temple of Apshai was the moderately sized dungeon-delving climax of all that. It was a blast. My PCs should not soon forget the scent of vanilla...
I still remember getting this and letting a friend borrow it, and the guy mistakenly formatted over the disk because he forgot to swap it out for a blank while copying it.

ReplyDeleteThis was the first D&D type computer game I played. Cant count how many hours I logged on my C64 exploring Apshai, and dying horribly every time :)

ReplyDeleteI did this once- I think it was for Bruce Lee. Ughh.
DeleteBITD, new copy utilities were as exciting as new games!
Spent way too much time on this with my TRS-80.
ReplyDeleteHad this on my C64 - it was already pretty dated by the time I started playing it but it was fun anyway.
ReplyDeleteWe played the hell out of this in high school during 1980 Christmas break on a friend's Apple II. Good (and simpler) times!
