Gygax's death spurned me after a 25 year hiatus into playing again. And of my very first encounters with D&D blogging right after Jeff Rients's blog was Grognardia. It was a total delight and I love almost 20 friggin years later I can still read your words when I need a escape. Thanks James.
For me, it was Erik Mona's Planet Stories reprints of Brackett, Moore, etc that led me to your Pulp Fantasy Library posts and, from there, into the broader old school movement.
Coming from the late 2e era, Grognardia was a revelation that resolved many of the issues that I had with then-current trends in fantasy lit and frpgs, and my campaigns have been better for it--never mind the many friends that I made along the way (hi Chris!).
Thanks for your encouragement and kindness over the years, James. I'm grateful for your many contributions to the community and hope that I'll still be reading Grognardia twenty years from now.
Great read, and a great blog. Discovered it soon after I decided to get back into gaming after grad school and a few miserable years on the job market…early 2012. Your blog was one of my biggest influences…helps that we are similar vintage, I think.
Thank you, thank you, for all the great writing and great memories. So glad you came back.
