Things of Beauty

They really are gorgeous, aren't they? I haven't ordered anything through Lulu in a very long time, because of the shipping costs, but I happily sprung for these and would do so again. Absolutely beautiful. Dan and Steve should be very proud.

  3. When you see these books in print they really look great, and thanks for the support James. Steve's b/w work is spectacular, and I truly feel that any ideas out there that full color is the only way to go these days for covers are not only ill informed but lacking appreciation for different means of expression. We shouldn't feel shackled in expression because of trend chasing "ideals". The LL core book has been doing great in distribution. They live and breath old-school, and I'm honored to have Steve's work represented with these books.

  4. Hey! Casino d6s and –if I'm not mistaken– Gamescience translucent blue dice! Are you sure those aren't MY copies? =)

  5. It's funny, James; I was just thinking this morning that the AEC cover had the kind of iconic power that the original PHB cover has. I could easily imagine a generation of gamers getting that tentacled eye firmly stuck in their heads.

  7. Argh. I was doing so well on saving cash this month, and then you have to give us a couple of centerfolds like these beauties...curse you, James!

  8. I don't want to give up my color covers, but I think Steve Zieser made the right choice to go B&W here. It gives the books a stark appearance that stands out from the other work on the shelf. (The choice to go with crimson cover text is also outstanding.) If I ever go Old School, LL will probably be the way I go--I always preferred B/X D&D to AD&D.

  9. OT: White Dwarf Archive

James has a copy of the White Dwarf CD-ROM archive. Very rare. Demonoid has a torrent of it and they only take new members once a month. They're doing it right now, but it won't last. I just joined and I'm downloading as you read this.

  10. Gorgeous James. I couldn't resist and have just ordered my own set including the Original Edition Characters book. Looking forward to getting my gamer hands on them.

As in "These books are priturs to look at." Or, "I priturs the poor fool who doesn't buy these."

  11. (OT) @brasspen: I trust James doesn't mind you using his blog to point to and promote illegal copying of RPG material?

  12. @irbyz

Well I hadn't actually thought of that. I just was excited that I was going to get access to the material and thought I was being community minded by sharing. If it's being received in entirely the opposite vein than I intended, then I'm more than happy to find the way to delete the posted comment.

  14. *sigh*

I too feel your pain, James. Oh, how I burn with fan-boy lust for these Lulu goodies, but living in Japan, it costs a fortune to get them. And so I linger in PDF Purgatory, knowing that Hard-Copy Heaven is beyond my grasp.
