It is a Corman film, after all. One of his better ones IMO, but finding the budget for better SFX on top of getting the three leads on board is asking a lot from him. Heck, I'm halfway surprised they could afford a real raven.
I thought the same thing while watching it. I think I even would have preferred some campy, 60's zooming in and out on the gargoyles to convey imminent threat.
Summon Cannon should be a first level spell.
