Inimical and Beneficial and the Worst and the Best

Some fascinating thoughts from Gary Gygax about the role of the Dungeon Master in Dungeons & Dragons (from the September 1980 issue of Fantastic Films). What he has to say reminds me a bit of my defense of the "killer DM" last year.

  1. I think Gygax makes the DM job sound much harder than it is.

    1. I agree. And it should be no surprise. Gygax was prone to self-aggrandizing declarations like this.

  2. I think Gygax is right, except that kind of preparation isn't mandatory. But if you're really into the hobby, it can end up being that much time devoted to one's campaign setting.

  3. I don't know if a DM needs to prep that much to run an decent campaign, but I'll say the two best DMs I have had did prep that much.
