Old School Sociology

Kellri, author of what is undoubtedly one of the best things ever to come out of the old school movement, has kindly done his bit for science by providing us with a taxonomy of old school gamers.

  2. The Terrible Two's?

    Humph.

    I resemble that remark.

  3. What about folks like me, who like it all?

    I'm a booster!

  4. Note that the "Old School Encoutners" PDF doesn't seem to be at the original location anymore, but can still be found at the "alternate download mirror" link at Kellri's site.

(While there I realized I know him from the old WFRP mailing list. Small world.)

  5. Hmmmm, I think I fall somewhere between the Grognard's and the Boys in the pub. I'm a Holmes editon-AD&D guy. A Neogrog perhaps? Or maybe, Church of Gygax Reformed?

  6. I'm happy with having definite Grognard tendencies, provided I haven't bored anyone too senseless with nostalgia.

Although, I must admit, that as a dedicated Arnesian, even Greyhawk is too much of an established setting for my liking.

    <grin>

I once met a guy years ago at GenCon who was such a grognard that he ran his "D&D game" with only Chainmail rules. Everything that came after just "spoiled the game." Now that's hard core. :)

  8. If we could somehow combine this typology with Jeff's three-fold model, we could be on to something of deep sociological significance . . . Maybe I could get a grant to pursue this line of research.

    Is that even POSSIBLE?

  10. "Is that even POSSIBLE?"

Hence the quotes around "D&D game." I doubted it possible, too. :)

  11. Chainmail means that magic users are artillery pieces, but you can run an FRPG with them.

    Wouldn't want to myself.

Though "ot-smokin' hippy lawyers with printing presses" made me laugh as did the baker comment.
