DCC RPG Character Generator

Take a gander at this awesome online character generator for DCC RPG, which not only creates a party of four 0-level characters for you, but also produces an attractive PDF with all their stats on a single page.

Now go forth and spread nihilism!

  1. Although the game itself doesn't quite rock my boat, that is a cool character generator :)

  3. Very, very nice. Continues my excitement about DCCRpg. If Goodman will incorporate his spells on to cards (that somehow include the spell duel system), and also use cards for crits & fumbles, then his game would be everything that I want in an RPG.

  5. It does make an attractive pdf. However, I've never been a fan of having a program roll my stats for me. I like to feel like I'm putting my own personal mojo into the dice rolls. I think that's especially important in a game like DCC where your choices at character creation are nill.

Also, one of the reasons I like old school style games is I don’t have to use a computer to create my character quickly. With computer print outs, your sheet is obsolete with every level (quite the paper waster in a game like 4th edition). I miss having a character sheet for the lifetime of the character. They become as much a representation of the character as a personalized mini does. I still have all my old character sheets from my school days. They're stained, covered in doodles and random notes, ripped, taped, and full of memories of great times.

    Sorry for the mini-rant/tangent!

  6. I had a couple of goes and was amazed at how 'badly' it was rolling ;).
Did a quick test after that and it took 24 goes before no one in the group of 4 had an overall negative modifier(and on that 24th go one character had overall +1).
It almost looked weighted toward the low end with so many really high overall negatives and very few high positives.

  7. It does seem to roll rather lowly. And I got lots of very similar occupations, sometimes duplicated upon the same sheet of four.

I may just print out four character sheets and let my characters roll themselves. That would also give them a touch more vested interest in their starting lowbies.

But a great program generally, very quick if you roll up a dozen or so then handpick 4 or 5 to use.

  8. Howdy all. Since I noticed lots of hits for the generator coming from the fine folks at Grognardia, I popped in...

Concerning the value of the dice rolls, as I developed the script, at first glance the scores seemed low to me as well, but upon actually crunching the numbers, the average looks to be exactly where they should be for 3d6: I've added a subtle "Average Roll" field at the top of the character sheets to show what your average is.

I think most of us are just conditioned to seeing 4D6, drop 1, and the large number of negatives just really pop out.

Since I developed the script in very quick fashion, I'm sure there are issues in there and I appreciate folks trying things out.

    Take care,
    Jon

(As for liking to roll up things without a generator, I completely understand. My own son (age 11) is enough of a Grognard that he rebuffed my attempts to get him to use the generator, as he loves the feel of the dice in his hands!)

  9. @Tovokas - Awesome app. Thanks for making it available.

Speaking of grognards - any thoughts on making a blank pdf for it? My son will complain about going diceless as well, I'm sure. :)

  12. @Tovokas:
Dude, you rule. I like the numbers. I ground through refreshing it dozens of times 'til I got the 12 pages I liked. All humans, an esoteric on each sheet and no soldiers or outlaws.
I'm going to use them to run the Free RPG Day Dungeon Crawl starter. Since the Character Funnel is all-random-all-the-time anyway, I'm going to deal out a sheet per player and have them cross off one discard. Then its off to the abattoir.

nice app, i like the presentation on the webpage too. one small suggestion would be to have it create a file with a different name than 'doc.pdf', it got a little lost in my download directory.
