Why Thousand Suns?

Here's another post over at Grognardia Games Direct that would benefit from more eyes. I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who've never picked up or played Thousand Suns, since one of the goals of the second edition is to attract new players who might otherwise have never considered it.

  1. Read through the Substack post and my question would be, “Why this and not classic Traveller?” They seem to tread very similar spaces, even if you homebrew and don’t use the Third Imperium. I may be the wrong audience, but perhaps you should lean into what makes this unique.

    1. My experience thus far is that longtime Traveller fans are the ones who ask this question (a lot), while people who've never played Traveller in any form obviously don't. But it's a fair question nonetheless.

    2. Is Thousand Suns the OSRIC of Traveller?

    3. No, if you mean a retro-clone of Traveller. The rules are completely different.

  2. Here's my "for instance" question:

"My friends want to (respectively) play the Stainless Steel Rat, the Mule, Hari Seldon, HAL, Rocket Raccoon, Little Fuzzy, and go explore Genesis from Wrath of Khan, where they might fight Daleks.

    Can they?"

    1. Yes. There are analogs or equivalents of most of those characters/ideas/concepts in Thousnd Suns already and it's quite easy to create almost anything else from the sci-fi of the '50, '60, and '70s without much effort.
