Urheim: Southeast Ruins

Map by FrDave
Today's post is another section of the surface ruins of the monastery of St. Gaxyg-at-Urheim. I'm happy with the way that this is turning out, though there's still much work to do. I'm also making changes to previous posts, as I get a better sense of what to include and how to present it. My ultimate goal, when the surface ruins are completed, is to collect them together as a single document, complete with art and additional connecting text. That's still in the future, but we're getting closer and I couldn't be more pleased. As always, constructive criticism and comments are encouraged.

Southeast Ruins

R.3 Barracks

See Lower Gatehouse

R.13 Margrave's Residence

Debris: Huge beams of sturdy and largely intact wood, some of which bear visible carvings that are recognizable as the escutcheon of the Margrave of Somtha (a pair of lances surmounted by a coronet).

8 Mercenaries
  • Company of the Quarrel stationed here to keep watch on the Lower Temple and any unauthorized persons approaching it.
  • Led by Corporal Hamund (see below), whom they despise.
  • If they break morale, they will flee toward their comrades in the Northeast Ruins.
  • Each mercenary carries 98 cp.
AC 6 [13], HD 1 (3 × 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 × 2hp), Att 1 × sword (1d8) or 1 × crossbow (1d6), THAC0 19 [0], MV 120' (40'), SV D12 W13 P14 B15 S16 (F1), ML 9, AL Neutral, XP 10.

Corporal Hamund
  • Commander of this detail, disliked by his men.
  • Cowardly braggart who is quick to surrender if he breaks morale.
  • If spared, he readily reveals the name (Captain Foulque) and location (Upper Temple) of his commanding officer.
  • He will also claim that the Gray Monks hid their great wealth in the Lower Catacombs, which the Company has not yet been able to find (a lie).
  • Carries 79sp, 84gp, and a half-drunk bottle of red monastic wine.
AC 5 [14], HD 2 (14hp), Att 1 × sword (1d8) or 1 × crossbow (1d6), THAC0 19 [0], MV 120' (40'), SV D12 W13 P14 B15 S16 (F2), ML 10, AL Neutral, XP 20.

R.14 Dormitory

Debris: Vast jumble of burned and brittle wood.
  • A successful search for secret doors uncovers a silver ampoule with its stopper still intact. Inside the ampoule is three measures of blessed myron (oil) that, when applied to an individual, grants immunity to fear of all kinds until the next sunrise. The ampoule radiates magic.

R.15 Armory

Debris: There is a mix of blasted stones and scraps of wood.
  • Spending at least 1 turn searching through the debris reveals the following: 1 suit of chainmail, 3 shields (bearing the heraldic device of St. Evad filzArn), 2 daggers, 1 polearm, and 2 swords.

R.16 Lavatory

Debris: Mostly large wooden splinters and a handful of stones.

R.17 Abbot's Residence

(listed as R.18 on the map in error – will correct later)

Debris: Large, broken beams of heavy wood.
  • 1 turn or more of searching unearths a locked, lacquered coffer containing 121sp, 56gp, and a partial map of the Lower Catacombs (covering areas L.1 through L.15).
  • A group of giant ferrets have established a temporary lair here, having recently been attracted to the surface ruins by the refuse created by the Company of the Quarrel.
4 Giant Ferrets
AC 5 [14], HD 1+1 (3, 5, 7, 9hp), Att 1 × bite (1d8), THAC0 18 [+1], MV 150\ (50'), SV D12 W13 P14 B15 S16 (1), ML 8, AL Neutral, XP 15

R.33 Eastern Wall

Debris: Little remains of this portion of the wall, its shattered stones having either been carted away long ago or rolled down the side of the incline upon which the monastery rests.
